Summary
"It's not about … not wanting a relationship."
"Oh." Something about the way Eddie said it, hushed and hesitant, felt dangerous. A precipice loomed before them, and Eddie danced on tiptoe towards it. Buck wasn't sure what they'd find over the ledge, but he knew he'd hurl himself over, if only Eddie asked. "No?"
In the privacy of the desert, miles away from anything they know, Eddie opens up to Buck.

Summary
Essek Thelyss dies.
Years later, Caleb continues to see him — in the study, in the bedroom, beneath the apple trees. For some time, he’s convinced these are nothing more than hallucinations. Wouldn’t be his first. But hallucinations don’t scare the cats. Hallucinations don’t leave scars on his chest. And the more twisted this visage of Essek becomes, the clearer it is that he needs Caleb’s help, now more than ever.

Summary
Essek tore his gaze away from those red eyes, seeking desperately something safer, softer. He was among friends. Cognouza was seconds ago and a timeline away. It hadn't happened — it wouldn't happen.
He settled on Jester, who beamed.
"Hi," she said, kindly, "I'm Jester. I like your weasel."
**
In another timeline, the Mighty Nein fall to Lucien. Essek, with Artagan-the-weasel's help, travels back in time to save them.

Summary
"Essek, stop."
Caleb resists. Hands firm — not soft, not caressing — on Essek's shoulders, he holds him at arm's length. His eyes are searching, and Essek finds he cannot meet them.
"Bitte, be honest with me, dear. Do you want to have sex with me?"
"You want to." Essek says. "And I am willing. Is that not enough?"
Caleb sighs and drops his hands, though not before petting Essek's cheek so briefly. "No, it really isn't."

Summary
And maybe it’s exhaustion from hours upon hours on the road, and patchwork sleep that never got deep enough to even matter, or too much shitty coffee and gas station food. Or maybe it’s the fact that they didn’t bother to turn on the lights when they walked in, and the shadows are always kinder, combined with Buck sounding so earnest, and maybe a little bit heartbroken. But no matter the reason, Eddie can feel his anger draw back slowly, like the ocean pulled by the tide.
“I know, okay?” Buck breaks the silence again, cutting Eddie off before he can open his mouth. “I know it’s stupid. We had a good time, we had fun, that’s – that’s all it was supposed to be, right? A getaway. I know this last year changed things. We can’t just go back. I–I–I know that. It’s just sometimes I –”
His voice breaks. Eddie can almost picture the fragments of it hitting the floor.
“Sometimes I’m wondering if I still even have a best friend or –”
Eddie winces. “Of course you still – Jesus Christ, Buck.”

Summary
Eddie shoves a legal pad and a pen against Buck’s chest. He sits next to Buck, so close their thighs touch.
“Write your contract,” Eddie says.
“Our contract.”
“Such a romantic.”
This isn’t romance, though. But Buck doesn’t want to remind Eddie of that, because he might take the legal pad—or, more importantly, the promise of Buck getting to touch his body—away. So Buck scrawls Buck and Eddie’s Friendship Sex Contract.
Or: Eddie and Buck strike up a friends with benefits arrangement. Every good understanding needs a contract. And a detailed list of likes and dislikes, while they’re at it.

Summary
"Hello!" A voice calls up from below.
Buck looks down the glass of his window. The entire fire department appears to be looking up at him. There are, notably, so many mustaches.
“Hi!” Buck yells back, motioning at the giant ladder. “Everything okay?”
“LAFD!” A voice calls back. “Just a practice exercise! No cause for alarm!”
Or, hot firefighters keep parading past his window. What's Buck supposed to do but flirt?

Summary
“I need you to drive me to the dentist.”
“Okay, yeah,” Buck agrees. “Put it in the calendar.”
“No,” Eddie says, clearing his throat. He sucks in a breath through his nose and lets it out through his mouth. “I need you to drive me, and I need you to stay, or I will climb out the restroom window.”
Or, Eddie is scared of the dentist. That's one secret. The other is in his sock drawer.

Summary
The guy gets straight to the point, asking, "What do you need?" in a dull, bored voice.
"My best friend is going to die. I want that to… not happen."
"No small feat, bringing back the dead. And it comes at a cost."
It's Eddie. Buck says, "Yes," without a second thought.
(Or: what happens when you're down so bad that you have your "best friend" brought back from the dead)
