More than eight hundred miles from Port Damali, almost a month’s travel. An entirely different universe. Any protests had been quickly stifled, tears ignored; the mage hadn’t allowed them even a minute to run upstairs and gather their things - the Empire will provide for you, they had been told. By then, the soldiers had been well-practised at extracting magically-talented children from their homes in the cleanest possible fashion, and they were swift and merciless.
And that had been it.*

“I –” A twitch of pain across his expression, which he could not help. Putting down ghouls was a hateful, awful task, and the ghoul in Tanvero had very nearly killed him; but the loss of his gift, the ability to destroy a ghoul, was still a raw and open wound. “No, no, needst not worry about that. And I absolutely do not have a cat. I feed the strays that live on the street in the evenings, but they aren’t mine. Except, last night one of them got into my flat somehow, and she won’t leave.”
Iäna’s smile grew to a grin.
“But she is not thy cat?”
“Of course not.”
“Well, othala. An thou’rt the one feeding her and sharing thy home with her, maybe she’s not thy cat, but thou art most certainly her man.”
Celehar huffed, but could not help but soften at the amusement on Iäna’s face.
“It won’t be for long. I’ll get her out tonight, I’m sure.”

Summary
Gerard Keay didn't die in 2014. He kept on working for Gertrude, and eventually was officially hired as an archival assistant - and when she disappeared, he was inherited by the new Archivist.
There is an avatar of the Eye in the Head of Institute's office, staring him down, warning him not to interfere. The world suspects him of his mother's murder. But the other archival assistants seem to have taken a shine to him anyway.

This might be the worst job Jesper has ever had. He spent the first sixteen years of his life shoveling horse shit, and this could be worse.
He can’t think of anyone in Kaz’s employ who would be cut out for an undercover job on the Geldstraat - Nina, maybe - but that person is certainly not him. All the same, the request was simple enough. The rumour is that someone tried to assassinate Jan Van Eck’s son, Inej had told him, and now he’s asking around for a Barrel bodyguard. Jesper happened to fit the job requirements.
