And the marine would even agree: getting out of that hell, even at such a cost, was a fucking gift of fate. But when Jason had to experience the same day over and over again, from the moment he fell into the ruins of the ancient temple to the end of the eclipse, it felt like a real curse. Like purgatory. Like punishment for all the bad things he'd ever thought and done.

Maybe he’s dead. Maybe he died when Lalo shot him in the head, and this is hell, or purgatory, or something. It would be a fitting fate for him: stuck fighting for his freedom over and over only to be trapped again; killing Salamancas again and again only to be confronted with more of them.
As far as metaphors for his life go, this is a little on-the-nose.

The sun blazes a sharp orange in the sky above her, and its sunbeams fall straight into her eyes, poking dizzying iridescent spots into the corners of her vision. Chris blinks a few times and then thinks to herself that trying to look at this world in its entirety is almost too much, like someone turned up the saturation in her vision, splashed a bucket of jarring technicolor paint over the pale yellow and gray-blue of the oceans she knew back home.
Basically: it feels like some weird-as-fuck Wizard of Oz bullshit.-
Or: Chris comes back to the Irons, and finds who she was before.
