    “Are you…” Nesta started, her voice nothing but a raspy whisper. “Are you real?”

    She said the words as if she couldn’t bear to speak them fully aloud, as if she didn’t quite believe that he was.

    Cassian blinked, brows furrowing. Not once had he ever seen her like this, not even when Elain had been put into the Cauldron, and not even during the war that followed. This was a level of horror he’d rarely seen in anyone, let alone this female, who was stoic until the last moment, always. And so, he heard himself say,

    “I’m real. I’m real, sweetheart. See?”

    Her eyes flicked down to his chest again, as if she didn’t believe him, and he reached for her injured hand gently, moving it so it could rest over his sternum, where his heartbeat rapidly.

    “What is it?” He asked again. “Was it a dream?”

    Her eyes met his, tears still streaming down her face. In a voice that was almost childlike, betraying her own confusion, she asked,

    “Personal matters.” She said through gritted teeth.

    “All morning?” He drawled. His eyes raked over her, taking in her light blue satin gown that hugged her curves. Nesta’s fingers curled and uncurled at her sides as she battled the urge to touch him.

    “Until the afternoon.” She didn’t care she was debasing herself, that she was now effectively as bad as Cassian had been when she was still rejecting the mating bond. She was splintering. Azriel’s eyes darkened.

    “Shirking all your duties just to get off?” He raised his brows, a smirk playing at his lips.

    “I am trying very hard to be polite when I say it’s all your fucking fault.” She snarled.
