Summary
"From the moment we enter crying to the moment we leave dying, it'll just cover your face as you wail and cry and scream."
Neil Perry never understood why Todd Anderson was so self-critical about his poems or his disdain for reading aloud. After discovering Todd's talent in poetry, Neil is inspired.

Summary
It works. For a little while, it works pretty fucking well. It isn't ideal, it never will be, but it's what they need and it's working.
So of course, something goes horribly wrong in what was meant to be a fool proof plan to gently extricate himself from Todd, even though it feels like peeling off his own skin. Todd starts initiating contact with him. In small ways of course, same as how Neil had done when they first met, but the roles are reversed and Neil thinks maybe he doesn't have to die to reach his special place in Hell, he's already living it.
Todd is...surprisingly touchy. Neil is...not quite coping.

neil’s slowly carding his fingers through todd’s grown-out hair, soft, careful not to wake him. his boyfriend is curled up into a tiny ball against his chest, and as neil tightens his other arm around todd’s sleeping form, he can feel his heart doubling in size from the wave of fondness that crashes into him.
he's having trouble believing todd’s real. he’s so overwhelmingly lucky.

or, 1.2k of pure domestic fluff where neil reflects on how much he loves todd and how grateful he is for what they have together.

Even at that small age, he knew what his family was like. Learning how to dream himself into different worlds, lives, bodies, how to perfect the art of escapism was the only thing easing the pain of near abandonment.
Or
"What's wrong? What happened?" He asks, voice sleep addled. Later, much later, this is the moment where his life splits up into Before and After.

Summary
“From the moment we enter crying, to the moment we leave dying, it will cover just your head as you wail and cry and scream!”
Oh.
The room fades. There is only Todd, his voice, the trembling honesty of it, the way he doesn’t look at anyone, especially not Neil, even though Neil knows he can feel it. Knows Todd can feel his eyes burning holes into him.
Neil wants to laugh. Wants to cry. Wants to stand up and grab him and say “you did it, you did it, you’re brilliant!”
Instead, he stays still.
The poem ends awkwardly, the way it began. Todd cuts himself off like he’s afraid he’ll say one word too many and disappear. Applause breaks out, too loud, too fast, Todd flinches at it.
He sits down quickly, eyes on his hands. They’re shaking.
Neil doesn’t clap. He can’t stop looking.
Todd never meets his gaze. He keeps his head bowed, jaw tight, like he’s bracing for something, judgment, maybe, or disappointment. Like he doesn’t trust what just happened to stay good.
Neil feels it then. Fully. Clearly.
Shit.
Or:
Somewhat of a fix it fic

Summary
Todd is stranger to the churn that crashes around his stomach, tearing down his walls and clawing its way to his heart, whenever he looks at Neil Perry. He simply can't help but allow a small smile to tug at his lips whenever his hand rests his hand on his shoulder for a moment too long.
He is unaware as to what to label his feelings, but, after all, as far as he is concerned, he has all the time in the world to sort it out...right?

Summary
There are endless ways to start a story - endless words, endless ways to put them together - and as a writer it could be hard sometimes to find the right ones to begin. He heard once that writers tend to overthink. Maybe that's what makes the beginning so difficult. Maybe that is why this story starts so simply; the voice wasn't of a writer.

Once he makes it to the lobby of Henley Hall, spotting them is easy pickings—after all, they make quite a sight, a middle-aged man surrounded by a small army of energetic teenagers who don't seem to realize that shouting "yawp" in lieu of applause is not proper theater etiquette. Neil can't quite wrap his head around the fact that these are his people. This is his family. He wouldn't trade them for the world.
