Perhaps it was their primal all-or-nothing bouts in the barren sands, the way they had torn at one another once they had disabled each other's blasters, used teeth and blunt nails on bare skin... Summary
Haru is adrift with nowhere to go, living aboard a spaceship from last century's estate sale, staying quiet and out of the way. Sousuke is grounded and cornered in the cutthroat undercity of Mawrth Vallis, fighting every day against his better nature to earn his keep. Their past is settled, their present is unfulfilled. They’re living out a dead end after too many wrong turns.
When Haru is forced to act on behalf of a temperamental courier to save the only home he could find, he involves them in a job above their pay grade. When Sousuke is tediously tasked by the only family he has left with escorting a pilgrim on a strange quest, he makes a mistake he can’t walk away from. Their paths will cross again, giving everyone involved a chance to make past into prologue.

Summary
Amos walks down the corridor to the galley, trying to decide between imitation pasta or imitation curry when he feels the grind of something hard under his boot. He lifts his foot up to find a small shard of plastic, shiny on one side and dull on the other. There are more of them in increasing size, leading to the galley like a trail of breadcrumbs. In the alcove where the coffee machine should be, there is a mess of grey duct tape holding back whatever remains.

"What was illogical, to him, was that Tav permitted it. Letting the vampire hold them tight, pinned with their back to his chest while he fed. Perhaps they had a bizarre vampire fetish - it certainly wouldn’t be the first time he’d encountered such. There was a soft trembling to their skin as he fed, barely parted lips in the dying firelight while the others slept.
But the few nights Astarion declined in a huff, they smiled and said they were glad he wasn’t hungry. A puzzling mystery that irked at him, staying on his mind in the hours between fights."
