During the dementor attack at little whinging, Harry nearly gets kissed. The dementor didn't manage to steal his soul, but it did manage to steal most of Harry's memories. The Order quickly takes him to Grimmauld Place, and Sirius volunteers to be his caretaker.
Sirius did mean well at first, but Harry is just too innocent to resist.

But I am glad that I did eventually figure it out.” He explained, smiling fondly as confusion grew on Sirius’ face.
“Moons, you’ve lost me. What are you talking about?” Sirius questioned, gently reaching out to grab Remus’ hand and intertwine their fingers.
“Regulus, one of my best friends and person I was most excited for you to meet… he’s over there.” Remus admitted, pointing towards the stage with a warm smile on his face. “But it turns out, you already know him.”
or, Sirius and Regulus both escape 12 Grimmauld Place at two different times, separately. Sirius leaves first, regretting an argument they had and Regulus leaves a year later. What happens when Sirius is searching for his missing s̶i̶s̶t̶e̶r̶ when he should be looking for his brother? Cue Remus John Lupin.
