Paris is a romantic city. Perhaps that's what makes it so difficult for Arthur to live here, despite the abundant amenities and London just a few hours away. Everything's overwrought, all friezes and corbels, buildings curling in on themselves and dripping with adornment, as if aching to be admired. The people are no different, rarely alone, moving just so to allow their hair or eyes to catch the light, each piece of clothing tailored to perfection.
Arthur appreciates it; if he didn't, he would have left for certain, career notwithstanding. He appreciates beauty, after all, and taste. But among the people of Paris, he can't help but feel like a sewer rat scurrying to and fro under a cloud of thick eyebrow. He feels it when he snaps out orders over text as the French talk and laugh in line for croissants.
