Muriel sniffs, eyes shining with fierce determination through their tears. “I’m going to figure this out, Mr. Crowley. It’s going to be okay.” They turn back towards the bookshop, but stop, looking over their shoulder. “I know you won’t hurt me,” they say quietly.

Ambrosius sees Bal swallow the pain from his sprained wrist. "Shut up, Todd," he says in a low voice, standing up from the jousting pitch. He cradles his arm as he walks away.
"I'm just sayin', man!" Todd calls after him. "No need to be a sore loser!" He looks at the other trainees gathered around him. "Amiright?"
Ambrosius wants to say something, wants to tell him to shut up, but for some reason he can’t find the words. He follows Bal, jostling Todd's shoulder on his way out.
