    Summary

    Modern Cultivators AU.

Lan Wangji finds Wei Wuxian pajamas to wear and coaxes him into them, wide plaid pants in dark blue and white and a t-shirt with two rabbits on it. Wei Wuxian looks down on the shirt and smiles for the first time all evening.

"Lan Zhan, do all your pajamas have rabbits on them?"

Lan Wangji thinks about lying, but it would be foolish when Wei Wuxian is standing right next to the proof. He inclines his head slightly.

    "I like rabbits," he says.

Wei Wuxian blinks and then he smiles a little wider.

“I'm just going to, uh, move my hand," he says. "It needs to be lower."

"Right," Wei Wuxian squeaks, stomach tensing under Lan Wangji's hand.

Lan Wangji has large hands. It's not something he thinks about very often but right now it feels as if he's trying to maneuver a rice pot lid across Wei Wuxian stomach. He finds Wei Wuxian's navel with his fingers and carefully counts out three fingers widths, letting his hand come to a rest, finally in position. He can feel the crinkle of Wei Wuxian's pubes through the boxer briefs against the edge of his palm and he's blushing all the way down to his chest. This was a terrible idea.

    Summary

Lan Zhan returns to the table and rustles through the pile of paper and cardboard, sets aside the paper booklet (an instruction manual, apparently) and then sees it: a gift label. In large, florid letters, it proclaims:

THIS HAS BEEN GIFTED TO YOU BY: WEI YING!!!!!!!!!!!!

followed by a second set of slightly smaller but equally florid letters:

    A MESSAGE FOR YOU : HI LAN ZHAN! I SAW THIS AND THOUGHT OF YOU! I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT ;) ;) ;) <3 <3 <3 ;)

Lan Zhan drops the card like it’s burned her.

Lan Zhan says she likes rabbits. Wei Ying misunderstands.

    BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Lan Zhan can’t help it. It’s too much. She screams and jolts forward, her back arching so much that she accidentally kicks the covers partly off. She turns it off as quickly as possible, fumbling to get it out of her so she doesn’t risk any more embarrassment. Wincing, she finally pulls it out and drops it on her bed between the covers, resigning herself to the fact that she will have to change the sheets but thanking every deity she can imagine for the small blessing that this all took place under the covers without exposing anything below her waist.

Her top half, on the other hand . . .

As soon as Lan Zhan calms down enough to be aware of her surroundings, she realizes a few crucial things. One: The blankets have come down far enough that her entire chest is exposed. Two: Wei Ying is staring at her, mouth agape. Three: Lan Zhan . . . kind of likes Wei Ying looking at her like that.

She doesn’t pull the covers back up, just meets Wei Ying’s eyes. Both of them are breathing heavily.

    Summary

Lan Zhan is glaring at him. That's probably fair.

The last time they'd seen each other, Wei Ying had been digging through Lan Zhan's garbage. They'd made eye contact over the shredded bags, the week's trash scattered around him like stinky, oversized Lego.

Lan Zhan's eyes had been wide with horror, and Wei Ying's had been equally wide with feigned innocence. He'd reached out slowly, maintaining the eye contact, and then flipped over the food waste bin full of onion peel and carrot skin as a distraction and slunk off into the night. Probably not his finest moment.

"Cool," says Wei Ying, vaguely aware that he's repeating himself. "Cool, cool. So how about we try this again? I can't do the fox thing but you can still give me the basket."

"This chicken is unsafe to eat," Lan Zhan informs him. "I will get you some more chicken."

"We can leave the damn chicken, you've been getting me chicken for a year," says Wei Ying impatiently. "Feed me a lotus cake and then we can kiss."

    Summary

Lan Zhan blinked, and pushed his wet hair off his forehead as he slid off his surfboard and stood upright. Wei Ying was standing on the beach, holding a pair of sandals and staring out, his sand-covered bare feet carefully out of reach of the actual water. There was a strange, mournful twist to his mouth that faded when he saw that he wasn’t alone, replaced by a warm smile. “Lan Zhan, is that you?”

“Mn,” he replied, and walked up to meet him there in the middle of the sand. Privately, he thought, who else would it be?

Wei Ying laughed. “I thought so, but I wasn’t sure. You looked good out there.”

In silver spray paint, almost iridescent against the slate gray of the concrete, and half-flecked away, read Lan Zhan and Wei Ying were here. And below that was a small, cartoonish drawing of a rabbit, instantly recognizable as Wei Ying’s handiwork—and now that he looked closer, he thought that Wei Ying might have been written in a different hand, too, like maybe he had pushed the can into his palm and demanded he add his name.

Lan Zhan’s heart thudded. Their names, here, together. Tucked away for all this time. He let himself get used to the idea of it.

“You were very insistent that I put my name too,” Wei Ying said, confirming his suspicion. “I remember thinking it meant something.” His thumb stopped moving. “I remember being so goddamn crushed when it didn’t.”
