Wei Ying's stomach dropped to his toes. The feeling coursing through him was sickeningly familiar. In the Burial Mounds, he fought tooth and nail to keep the spirits out of his head. Whenever they'd get too close, his skin crawled, and it felt like he were a puppet being pulled along by strings. Now, a lighter, less malicious energy prodded him; it was gentle but not merciful. It reached its hand down his throat and stole words from his lips before he could think to stop it.

Summary
The sawfish is fully stationary, sans an occasional spasm of its fins. It floats down the tank with the man-made current, and then twitches back to life and circles back over with a few lazy kicks of its tail. When it turns to the side, Denji sees its smile again — stuck in that permanent upwards-ticking crescent. The sawfish bumps the glass with its nose again.
“He wants to get out,” says Denji.

Denji was thirteen, then fourteen, and he could say three things with confidence: he had a devil as a friend, he was fucking hungry, and he wanted to have a girlfriend. Or something. Look, it was as close to confident as he was ever going to get, so he might as well include it in the dumb list.
If not that, then—
The third item would really have to be that he just wanted to bash this one guy’s head in, you know, and finally be done with his dad’s shitty but ginormous debt.
(or: denji becomes a devil sooner than later, with a head wound and a lot of trauma. he wants to leave something behind and get something better, and he’s about to.)

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are members of a joint-sect crew of researchers traveling past the edge of the known universe, past the reach of the light of the stars themselves, and into the void of empty space beyond. But they soon discover the void is not as empty as they assumed after Wei Wuxian finds himself exposed to a strange form of radiation during a routine space walk to repair the ship. When he develops further symptoms of an unknown infection, and even more concerning swirling black eyes and emotions-not-his-own, Wei Wuxian has to figure out what is happening and find a way to stop it before they’re trapped floating in the void forever.
