Summary
He’s on the side of the interstate in the warm woven center of night, and Scully is not in his passenger seat. He’s thinking about a research paper he wrote as an undergraduate about suicide methods.
a small weird cancer arc thing about the space between elegy and demons, because it haunts me that those episodes are back to back. lobotomies, psychotic breaks, Vonnegut, best friends. and berries

Summary
Maybe Steve’s always been good at lying, or maybe this is what truth tastes like now. Maybe he does hate his old house, like he hates all his old selves, and maybe that is how he loves Hawkins: a place that tore him, like a bad tooth, out of the life he thought he knew.
Dropped him, free-falling, into a new one.
Good ache. It’s a good ache. You can see for miles if you know where to stand.
[Steve, after everything, doesn’t quite know where to start. And then there’s Nancy.]

Summary
But maybe Steve’s tired of Robin always haranguing him, so he relents. Because he’s Batman with a squad of Robins—and Batgirl, he supplies when Robin shoots him a look—and because he spent so much time cleaning out Jimmy Fast Hands’ bathroom that he needs to make all that effort worth it.
“That’s just sunk cost fallacy, man,” Dustin says to him. “And if you’re worried about a gate opening in your pool, may I remind you that the sidewalk right outside of the station split in half, revealing the fiery and somewhat dead depths of the Upside Down, which was why Jimmy Fast Hands beat it—”
Steve just flaps a hand at him. It could mean anything from quit your yapping (except then he’d press his fingers together, and he didn’t) to come give me a hand, and it’s usually the latter, but Dustin doesn’t want to give in.

“Nothing’s going to change what’s happening. She doesn’t even have her parents there to help her deal with it all, and she’s looking out for Mike at the same time. She’s…”
Jonathan faltered. Organising a funeral for Will, trying to handle the impossibility that was the death of his baby brother, the way his Mum spoke to lights instead of helping—it all flashed through his mind.
“She’s so strong,” he said slowly, turning to face forward. “But shit like this breaks you. It changes you.”
Or: The conversation Steve and Jonathan could have had in the WSQK van in Season 5, Episode 2 if the Duffers weren’t cowards who don’t know their own characters.

Summary
"You miss all the shots you don't take," says Nancy, still good-natured, no right to pick at Jonathan when she hasn't seen him in so many months, when Steve put an arm around him. Is there anything that Steve has not forgiven? Is there anything he won't let them mock about him, so they can feel better about themselves?
The light, golden or not, is fading. Nancy takes a breath, examines no mirror of memory.
We've changed. We've all changed.
It's like none of it ever happened.

“You know I have come across it before, right? Assigned reading.”
Right. Sure. Back when Steve last graced an English class, the Hawkins High PTA hadn’t moved on to witch-hunting just yet. Book-burning’s, what? One step down?
“So did you read it?”
Also, during crawl prep last week Dustin heard Nancy and Robin chattering about The Catcher in the Rye and heard Steve hearing, too—an impossibility possible with Steve, who’s a far easier read than the book itself.

“I told you. Dangerous jobs are my thing. Maybe, for once, Byers won’t try to beat me to the punch.”
“That’s not funny,” her voice is barely a hiss. She says something else that Dustin can’t quite make out.
What are they saying? What is she doing? Did she convince him that it’s an idiotic idea yet? She’s not actually considering it is she?
Steve wouldn’t do it. He can’t. Dustin won’t let him.

Summary
It’s there that you feel it.
The shift.
Because when you look back on this summer—when the mall’s gone dark, when the smell of freezer burn fades from your hair, when Scoops Ahoy is just another entry on a long list of bad jobs—
This is what you’ll remember.
This exact second.
The one where you stopped pretending.
The one where you realized you’re screwed.
Utterly and irreversibly fucked.
ᥫ᭡
Once a king, now demoted to ice cream court jester, he wears that sailor hat like it's penance in this neon-lit purgatory you call a summer job. On anyone else, it'd be a joke. But on him? It's a goddamn crown. Welcome to Scoops Ahoy: where dignity melts faster than the soft serve and every road leads right back to Steve Motherfucking Harrington.

Summary
Jonathan realizes what’s happening just a split second after his fate is sealed. He sees the sharpness in her grin.
The two of them turn to see Tommy, Carol, and, of course, Steve Harrington leaned up against the lockers trying to smother matching grins. Tommy tilts his head and smiles in mock sympathy, like “better luck next time”. Carol waves at him playfully. Jonathan meets Steve’s eyes and holds his gaze for a few seconds before Steve frowns and looks away.
“Nevermind.” He mutters, his face burning red. “I’m sure you’ll be able to find someone else.” He slams his locker shut and walks as quickly as he can to the next period.
OR
Steve changes. Jonathan notices. It feels unfair, after everything.

Summary
“I love you,” Steve says, just as Robin gets halfway out the car.
It’s not what he says, exactly, she thinks, but the way he says it. Or maybe it’s because the last time she heard him say those words, they sounded like they’d been punched out of him back then, too: at Starcourt, his mouth twisting—so ready to laugh at himself—while sirens lit up his face, red and blue.
Robin thinks, just as she did then, you’re hurting.

Wake up. Vomit. Try and hide a massive hangover. Avoid Nancy. Put on a suit. Drink water. Drink more water. Give the best damn speech of all time, one that puts Mike's pedantic bullshit one to shame. Clink glasses with Steve, because yeah—his was definitely better. Hug Mrs. Wheeler, offering her his congratulations. Do the same with the groom. Ask how Ted is doing. Share a dance with Robin. Eat cake. Retire to his hotel room. Fall asleep and—
Wake up.
It's Tuesday again. The sort of day where the sun only rises to humiliate you.

Summary
Today, in the office—after the phone call had ended and she waved off his questions with practiced nonchalance—her silence had confessed to him that she is dying. Fast. Faster than the treatments can keep up with. There's a war raging beneath her beautiful skin, its home base located in her sinus cavity, right up against her brain where she keeps her beautiful mind, and she is losing.
She is losing.
But they don't talk about it.
They don't talk about dying.
