Ice doesn't intend to learn more, determined to just get through Top Gun and finish with a trophy in hand.
His plan is going fine until a single folded flag later, when everything starts to change.

Mav knows there's this thing happening between him and Ice: something that starts to grow a little stronger with each day. It keeps pulling them together, even if neither of them seems to know what to do with it.
Mav figures that they'll figure it out at some point.
He just really doesn't expect the memory of his dead brother to help along the way.

Summary
Maverick didn’t know how exactly he’d ended up here, gravel and broken glass pushing through the knees of his jeans. It probably should have concerned him, the gaping, dark hole in his recent memory. Maybe it would later. If he’d get a later that is. All things considered, it could go either way.
The next bottle shattered right in front of him, the spray of green glass and dregs hit him a split second before the raucous howl of drunken cheers.

The town had changed shockingly little in the last seventeen years. The familiarity was the furthest thing from comforting. It was like he’d never left. It was like it’d been waiting for him.
He navigated through the winding streets on detached muscle memory. If Ice found it odd that he hadn’t asked for directions, he didn’t say so, but Mav could feel him watching from behind the dark shield of his aviators.

The next morning, over coffee, Ice had carefully avoided his gaze as he’d mixed in the cream to his coffee, watching it swirl as he stirred it before confessing, “I love making you beg for it.”
Maverick had taken a beat to realize what he’d meant, and flushed crimson up his neck and jaw. He forced himself to meet Ice’s gaze before replying. “Then do it more often.”
