Summary
In hindsight, one of Leonard’s greatest failures regarding The Incident was how completely he’d allowed Spock to fall through the cracks. Both of them had thrown themselves into recovery efforts, medical care and temporary shelter and arguing with legislators from so many different planets and Starfleet regulations and and and and… the list went on for months before everyone involved was spat out the other side, suddenly in charge of the flagship of the ‘fleet with the eyes of the galaxy on their backs. Leonard had been too busy coming to terms with the fact that technically he was a CMO without an Academy degree to realize that Spock hadn’t once spoken with anyone qualified to determine if he really wasn’t emotionally compromised until it was far too late to push the issue. He’d let it go, assuming that Uhura and Starfleet had the situation well and truly under control.
Now, looking at the man sitting hunched over on his couch, finger and thumb spinning almost fast enough to spark, Leonard wished he’d looked into it a bit more.

Summary
Rule number one of command is that young men and women die. Rule number two is that doctors can’t change rule number one.
A routine officer exchange turns into a nightmare when the USS Solace is attacked. With the Captain dead and systems failing, McCoy becomes the ranking officer. Trapped in the dark with the Enterprise three days away, McCoy must reconcile the healer he is with the commander he has to be — even if it means breaking his oldest promise.

Or: Spock and McCoy have known each other for a hundred years.

The start of the end of a beautiful friendship. I was always so glad that Spock had McCoy for so long.
