Summary
The world is too silent, the Romulan too loud. The device in her pocket buzzes and her bloodslicked hand slowly reaches for it.
The button is lit blue.
The pale light blurs to halo around the device, bleeding out over James bleeding on the floor. La'an blinks, tries to clear her watering eyes and the light spills even further.
Her throat is burning, and she doesn't breathe and she doesn't think, only grips tight on his still body with one hand and clenches her other tight, closed palm pressing down on the lit button.

La’an knew she should be annoyed. He was cocky, and bossy, and altogether too charming. Internally, she sighed. She glanced sideways at her companion as he flipped the pages of a print newspaper. When his eyes almost caught her looking, she closed hers and again pretended to be asleep.
He wasn’t the worst. She could admit that much.
