The nature of creation is to change.
When Tony first creates an AI copy of himself, he does it on a time crunch, without thinking about the code's longevity. Wrenched awake from his coma following Secret Empire, Tony hacks Rhodey back to life and comes face to his own digital face. A face that has been walking around, building a life separate from Tony’s, saving the world, saving Steve.
Steve too, has been wrenched awake. He’s driving westward, letting the bleeding horizon drip into ink blots over the spots of his life Hydra has ruined. And when Tony’s AI shows up on the road, Steve can’t help reaching out to touch the blue outlines of that familiar, yet not-familiar face.
TS-BE-V3.27 flits across the country between both of them, and doesn’t belong to either of them.

Summary
The Ultimates have twelve months left to save the universe. Tony's busy trying to free himself from the Stane-Stark legacy staining him and get to engineering some heroes and hope.
Steve Rogers is newly defrosted, beloved by the Ultimates, inscrutable, and unfortunately, the number one setter of fire to Tony's loins.
He also doesn't seem to think much of Tony's work on the Ultimates, but it's fine. Tony can prove himself and kick his crush before it goes further.

“Oh yeah?” Tony cranes his neck around to follow Steve. Blond hair is tickling Steve’s brow and his body is tensed up, muscles bulging against his shirt. Anticipation whets Tony’s tongue; his body as impatient as his mind for Steve, always for whatever Steve has planned for them. It mixes with the sumptuous shame of potentially being discovered out here in the gym. “That a promise, tough guy? Gonna give it to me so good that I won’t be able to get away? Won’t even want to —” like he ever does, “won’t think to tap out?”
“Sure,” Steve says.
His voice is nonchalant, level and professional as it is in a meeting room brief, but —

The man who comes to see him in on the 9th day in the hospital is gaunt. Greasy. Less clean than everyone else who's trundled in, asking if Steve knows them and then lied about being disappointed when he’s said no. This man is a spindle. A man spun around too many times. Wind chapped full lips and scratchy threads of his haphazard beard peak over a strange metallic, full-bodied suit of armor that makes something behind Steve’s eyes hurt.
He blinks them slowly at the man, just to see if that helps.
