[Sokka is five when the first mark appears.
It writes itself in a deep red like a wound, as if someone had carved the word “nonbender” in a messy font across the knuckles of his left hand, as if it was handwritten with a knife.
When he asks his mother, as she applies salve on Sokka’s knuckles, she sighs deeply and says nothing for a few moments.
“Sometimes, spirits don’t make much sense.”
Sokka has yet to turn thirteen when he wakes up screaming in pain, about ten soulmarks all over each other between his left shoulder and his ear, red and vivid like burning flesh. Among the few words that are somehow possible to read out of the disastrous scribbling, “disrespectful” and “coward” and “burned” and “sorry sorry sorry” are the ones that stand out the most to Sokka. He thinks, at the tender age of twelve, whoever did this to his soulmate will be sorry too, one day.
A month after Hakoda leaves him with the job of the protector at the age of thirteen, Sokka realizes, with a bitter taste in his mouth, that he’s got more soulmarks than his entire village combined.]
Or, to have a soulmark is to carry the vilest things that your soulmate believes about themselves on your skin.

Summary
The boy grows up and learns about names and how to keep them close to your chest. One of his names is in Gallifreyan, and the other is in a language he has never heard of. To him, it looks just like a rose; but then again, to anyone who does not speak Gallifreyan, the other one would look simply like a conglomeration of circles, too. He endeavours to learn that language of flowers as soon as he can, endeavours to learn every language, know everything, so that he can see every edge of this wonderful, mystical thing called the world for himself.
As he grows older, he begins to slowly come to a vague understanding of the meaning behind the words he has heard and mindlessly repeated a thousand times: one friend, one foe; one love, one loss.
He reasons that it must be the other name that is destined to be foe, for there are no Gallifreyans he could ever consider as such, no Gallifreyans who would ever hurt him willingly. It saddens him that it must be so, for he would have loved to travel the world searching for his greatest love, far more than doing so to seek out his eternal foe. There are a lot of downsides to being a snake, the rather uncomfortable, painful, and distressing process of shedding skin is one of them. Crowley tries to deal with it on his own just as he had been doing for the past six millennia, but unlike the last thousands of years, he is not alone anymore, and Aziraphale isn't going to let Crowley struggle through anything on his own. 1941 is the London Blitz and the year that MI5 really comes into its own with the now infamous ‘double cross’ system. The service keep tabs on suspects, root out enemy agents and try to turn them into doubles.
Anthony J Crowley is fucking great at this job. He can be sneaky, underhanded and damn ruthless but also charming and kind. It’s what makes him good at turning.
Aziraphale is just a regular Soho bookseller who loves his shop and books and good food and wine when he’s approached by a woman claiming to be MI5, wanting to recruit him for espionage. The poor man is too trusting and gets the shock of his life when he’s approached by a charming but dangerous-looking man also claiming to be MI5.
Crowley recruits Aziraphale to double cross a double crosser and Aziraphale takes to espionage like a duck to water.
Danger, hijinks, and sex ensue.

There was a faint tracing of scales along the woman's cheekbones, tracing down her thin arms and lean thighs. The nipples on her pale, almost flat breasts were dark as night. Fiery red curls fell over dagger-sharp shoulders sprayed gently with more black scales, and the golden eyes were wide and snake-like. The woman was beautiful, but hardly human.
"Crawly," the woman said with disgust. "Was that the best you could do, angel?"
"I said I didn't have much imagination." Aziraphale's lips were heavy, and she was almost sure she wasn't forming the words properly. There was some kind of spell over her, holding her almost immobile. The venom must have been paralytic. If she had been human, she supposed she would have been dead. Her corporation didn't like it much either. "What name would you prefer I use for you?"
The stranger tipped her head on one side, considering. "Crowley?"
Aziraphale almost laughed. The whole situation was simply too irritating. If she was to die now, at the hands of some local deity, the paperwork hardly bore thinking about. And her precious work on Sappho's poetry, gone.
"Crowley, then. You're a nymph of some kind, I take it?"

“Hello.” He says, and then murmurs, almost to himself, “You look just like Wille.”
“I know.” She’s been told that her whole life. She and her father share the same dirty blond hair, brown eyes, and slightly crooked smile. It’s different when this man says it though. Almost more personal somehow.
“Sorry,” he says, his kind brown eyes twinkling with an odd mix of wistfulness and amusement, “you probably don’t recognize me, I’m-“
“-Simon Vasquez.” Myla breathes, taking in his greying curls and the slight quirk of his lopsided smile, “I know.”
And she does. This is the only person her father has ever loved. This is the man who her father associates with the colour purple. He's the reason her dad's bedroom walls have been violet longer than she's been alive, because when her father is surrounded by the colour he's surrounded by the memory of him.
