    Summary

Jean continues to wait until Clare’s eyes flicker up, over her shadowed, bare torso beneath the cloak and up to her face. All Clare sees in Jean’s expression is curiosity. That, and the inexplicable trust in her silver eyes that’s lingered there ever since Clare wrapped her arms around Jean’s neck and refused to let her die. Clare told her that her life debt has been repaid, but if Jean insists on following her and looking at her like that, so openly, so intensely, then maybe she should … “How is your body?”

The only indication that Clare has surprised her is the way the edges of Jean’s eyes widen for a brief moment and then soften ever so slightly. Clare doubts she would have noticed when they first escaped Riful, but in the few days that passed since she has found herself watching Jean just as closely as Jean watches her.

“Completely fine, thanks to you,” Jean says, and Clare knows she means it.

    Summary

They stare at each other until Zenkichi tries to break the stalemate.

“K -” Kurusu. Nope. He was just scolded for that. Kurusu raises an eyebrow expectantly when Zenkichi cuts himself off. He sighs and tries again.

“J - …” Joker. Technically, that’s the correct answer - and the leader of the Phantom Thieves watches him with narrowed eyes when Zenkichi stops a second time.

    Technically, that’s correct.

But Zenkichi knows that’s not right. Not now. Not with what he wants to say.

“... Kid,” Zenkichi says instead, in a tone that makes Kurusu startle - and behind the black and white mask, his eyes go wide and he looks less like the seasoned thief he’s dressed as and more like the teenager he is.

    Summary

Phainon is unusually quiet as they stand in front of the vegetable stall in Marmoreal Market, studying the colorful array of vegetables in front of them as if he’s deep in thought.

Mydei had been about to turn and ask Phainon’s opinion on dinner, but he lets the question dissolve in his mouth. Instead, he watches Phainon’s bright blue eyes narrow ever so slightly as he stares down at the brown lentils and carrots and tomatoes, and when his gaze drifts over the onions and celery and heads of garlic and back to the lentils, it doesn’t seem like he’s looking at them at all. It’s as if he’s looking at something far away, something just out of reach; something that makes his expression turn wistful and melancholy.

    Summary

“Did you calculate properly?” Mydei asks, standing gracefully and rounding the table to sit on the sofa next to Phainon. Even the subtle dip of the cushions beneath him is enough to make Phainon’s breath hitch. When he speaks, Mydei’s voice is gentle and unhurried. “Or are you just taking my word for it?”

Phainon laughs - Mydei fudging the numbers for a win is the last thing he would suspect, right now at least - and then cuts himself off with a groan at the movement. He has to hold himself still for another long moment, breath coming heavy and heart racing from the flash of urgency thrumming through him.

When it fades back to something manageable, Phainon blinks away the blur of unshed tears and looks back at Mydei. He is watching Phainon with that same intensity - golden gaze burning as he takes in Phainon’s state, reads him like an open book, and asks for more of him because he knows Phainon can give it to him. Something hungry and knowing and affectionate all at once.

    Summary

Phainon waits patiently, despite his instincts screaming at him to thrust in again, to claim the alpha beneath him, to prove who’s the stronger between them. He won’t take what he isn’t offered, even if he wants so, so badly. He always wants Mydei, in whatever capacity Mydei will allow him.

“Make me submit, whatever it takes,” Mydei says, finally. He turns his head so that his face is buried in the pillow and Phainon can’t see his face, but he can see the way his ears and neck are flushed as he speaks, words echoing Phainon's desire in plain, earnest affection: “All I want is you.”

    Summary

The Flame Reaver makes a noise that almost sounds like a growl, but Phainon now knows it’s not of aggression - its anguish, a sound of effort as he tries to keep himself from unraveling long enough to pass the Coreflames and memories of countless cycles to Phainon.

“Be still,” the Flame Reaver says, and Phainon tries. No other cycle has fractured this way, where the process of transferring from one vessel to the next took more than a simple touch. In no other cycle has the Flame Reaver reached out towards Phainon and failed to grant him all that power in a single gesture. Instead, he was left cupping Phainon’s face with cold metal gauntlets as the world began to crumble and erode around them.

    Summary

Misyr is only gone for a handful of hours at a time. Kotone knows that unless he absolutely has to be anywhere else, he is here, with her, because he knows the loneliness of the ashen planet. He’s lived centuries upon centuries of it before they even met, thousands of years plagued by pain and solitude, and he doesn’t want that for her now that he’s human and she’s become something else.

That, and he loves her. Just as she loves him.

    Summary

Khaslana tries to open his mouth to speak, but all that escapes is a breathy gasp. Phainon laughs, still sounding so indulgent, and threads firm fingers through Khaslana’s hair - gently, at first, then his fingers tighten to almost painful. The sudden scent of sunburst-gleam over blazing gold wheat and burnt offerings surrounds them.

“Shh,” Phainon whispers, shushing him like he would a naughty pet, “be good.”

    Summary

“Mister?” Khaslana’s own voice asks him, so bright and innocent in his childishness, “who are you?”

Khaslana’s words catch in his throat, choking him, stopping him from saying anything that he wanted to. The child’s eyes blink up at him, wide and blue and happy. Trusting. Excited to see him, even.

“Just someone passing through,” Khaslana says, and he nearly winces at the roughness in his voice. His words come out slowly, heavily, and pained enough that the child frowns. He remembers this. He’s tried this once before. He says, But you sound so -

“But you sound so tired,” the child says, genuine sympathy and concern in his voice.

    Summary

Carefully, Mydei reaches towards the chalice.

As his gauntleted hand gets closer to it, the thicker the air feels, and it’s almost like he’s reaching underwater when he finally grasps the stem of the chalice. As he raises it towards himself, he thinks he can hear the faint sound of merrymaking, or perhaps the steady lapping of waves against the shore.

When Mydei presses the edge of the chalice to his lips, his eyes meet Phainon’s. There is clear worry writ across Phainon’s face, but once he sees Mydei looking at him, that worry is tucked away behind a veil of determination. Very slowly, Phainon nods, as if to say that he’s ready to handle whatever might happen to him.

And so Mydei begins to drink.

    Summary

Mydei stares at him, silent for a beat, before speaking again, slowly, blatantly ignoring Phainon’s question. “... You’ve never kissed anyone.”

“I didn’t say that!” The rebuttal bursts from Phainon before he can even think it through, his flush climbing to higher on his cheeks. Mydei raises his eyebrows and scrutinizes Phainon’s expression in that way of his, when he looks straight through all of Phainon’s masks and walls. Denial is futile, but he has to try anyway. “I didn’t say anything! How did you even jump to that conclusion?!”

“So I was right,” is all Mydei supplies. He even has the audacity to look smug about it.

    Summary

The memory expands to lapis-colored figures set in gemstone, and to her surprise, she sees Mydei and Phainon appear beside her, sitting on the kline. They are leaning in so close that Stelle thinks they’re kissing, until Phainon leans back. He has a soft expression as his hands linger at Mydei’s jaw, cupping his face.

“There,” Phainon says, so quietly and fondly that Stelle’s ears burn. The rating of this memory shard is genre-appropriate, right? But all Phainon does is lift one hand to tuck strands of Mydei’s hair away from his face and gently rub the shell of his ear. “How is it? Does it hurt?”

    Summary

Phainon stares down at Mydei, fast asleep beside him in their shared bed, the dim light of the Entry Hour filtering through the curtains and brightening the edges of him in a warm glow. Like this, fast asleep, there is a sense of peace in his expression. A lightness that Phainon rarely sees when Mydei is awake, a freedom from the burden of responsibility and duty. His breathing comes out as soft, warm puffs of breath against the pillow, the only sign of wakefulness a discontented murmur when Phainon had extracted himself from Mydei’s embrace with great difficulty; it’s the siren’s call of sleep and the safety of Mydei’s arms, head to his chest and hearing his strong heartbeat beneath Phainon’s head, that tempts him to retreat back under the covers, but when he remembers what they agreed on, a flash of arousal chases away the haze of sleep.

    Summary

Mydei hisses briefly and then growls again, yanking Khaslana’s hand from his clothes and pinning it to the ground. When he speaks, his voice is rough with exertion and instinctive arousal from the fight and posturing. “Do you surrender?”

Khaslana laughs again. If only he could. “No,” he says, “you’ll have to try a little harder.”

Mydei stares at him for a long moment, the thoughtful expression on his face telling Khaslana that he knows exactly what Khaslana is actually asking. Make me submit.

    Summary

As Mydei has before, he takes the lead and rounds the corner first - only to freeze completely. Even with his back to Phainon, Phainon can see how his entire body has gone rigid, posture stiff and dropping lower, like he can’t decide whether to fight or flee.

Mydei looks stunned to silence, as if completely unable to react.

“What happened?” Phainon asks, urgently, and immediately steps forward -

“Wait,” Mydei says as Phainon steps up beside him, a second too late. But the edge of panic in his voice makes Phainon turn as he moves. Mydei’s gaze snaps to Phainon, and Phainon has never seen that expression on him. His eyes are wide, staring at him but as if unseeing, chest rising in quick, shallow breaths, clear tension in his muscles. “Wait, Phainon -”

“Do you have any idea what time it is, Deliverer?”

All Phainon offers Mydei is a smile, the same way he does when he greets Mydei every Entry Hour he can - and under the everlasting, if slightly dimmed light of the Dawn Device, it could very well be the long lost dusk or dawn with the the way the light filters through Mydei’s curtains in the color of muted rust.

But it isn’t. Not yet. All of the surrounding doors and windows are firmly shut, curtains drawn within, and the sounds of Okhema stilled to cottony quiet. It is no Evernight, but a shroud of silence hangs in the deserted pathways outside Mydei’s quarters.
