Summary
She and Mika said they are going to be friends. There’s been some vague discussions of ‘somewhere down the line’, which, she’ll admit, is something that makes her feel very excited, but for now, friends. She knows she’s not ready for anything more than that, not yet. Hence the compartmentalizing.
She can do that. She can set aside any lingering romantic or sexual feelings she has for Mika and focus on just being friends. Besides, Mika might not end up moving to Chicago. This could all be a non-issue, really.

Seven years after Mika left Jules in that locker room, they've settled into a new normal; this fun new thing where they are just friends

Summary
The door creaked loudly and she winced, checking behind her into an empty hall to see if anyone heard. Beatrice did not even notice the lit candle by the window until she walked in and saw movement.
She reached for the knife on her hip but it wasn’t there.
Damn pajamas.
“Were you about to shoot me?” Ava asked, her hair down out of its usual form.
Oh.
“I was reaching for my dagger, actually,” Beatrice answered truthfully, pulling her robe tighter. “You frightened me.”
“I was here first, you scared me.” Ava looked her up and down, a long thing that made Beatrice skin burn. “It’s nice to know where you keep your knife though, for next time.”

Summary
“I was told I would be able to meet with the chef this afternoon,” Beatrice says, as politely as she can manage. She’s meant to start working tomorrow and she hasn’t even met the executive chef yet, outside of traded emails where she was swayed by the promise of full autonomy into leaving her position as pastry chef at one of the only restaurants in the city with three Michelin stars for a fledgling fusion tapas joint sandwiched between a pierogi stand and a vape shop on the lower east side that got an upstart Michelin star in its first year of operation.

Summary
“We are just best friends who sleep in the same bed and shower together, it’s really not that big of a deal.”
Mary looked at her then, jaw practically dropping to the floor. She opened and closed her mouth a couple of times before shaking her head in disbelief, holding out her hand in a ‘stop right there’ motion. “Okay, pause, back all the way up. What in the ever-loving ‘and they were roommates’ bullshit is this? I knew about the bed sharing which is suspicious but passable enough as platonic but why in the world are you guys showering together?! Are you guys having platonic sex too??”
Ava scoffed defensively. “No we are not sleeping together—“
Mary’s eyes narrowed at her.
“Shut up! I don’t mean it like that. We sleep together but we don’t sleep together. That would be weird.”
“Oh, well, I’m glad you draw the line somewhere.” Mary deadpanned.

Here’s the thing about not making something an issue though: not everyone will be willing to ignore what is so plainly right in front of them.
