"Dislikes Feyd-Rautha?" he asked hopefully.
Her lips curled into a wry smile. "No—he dislikes that hair."
They spoke in hushed tones, though nothing could sway Paul and Feyd-Rautha's attention from one another. They sat across from each other at the dinner table, conversing and flirting and occasionally missing their mouths with their forks, so focused were they on mooning over each other. Leto said, "That can't be right. Paul hasn't been able to stop staring at Feyd-Rautha since he disembarked from his ship."
"Trust me, he dislikes it." At Leto's doubtful expression, Jessica added, "You shaved your beard, that one year—"
His ears went red as he flushed with embarrassment. Hastily, Leto said, "I was in disguise!"

Feyd-Rautha was hunched over, his entire body tense, one hand clapped over his mouth—no, over his nose, so as to not breath in Paul's scent—
Their eyes met. Feyd-Rautha's ice-blue irises disappeared as his pupils grew large and black, like a shark scenting blood in the water. He drew his hand away, inhaled deeply, exhaled with his mouth open, his blackened teeth bared in a half-snarl. He shook his head in the manner of a dog shaking water from its fur, and it was then Paul became aware that Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen also had a scent, and it told him that he was an alpha who had just been sent into rut.

"Oh! I see!" She was unexpectedly stung by this small rejection. Her son was not too old to ask to be carried here and there, or to be tucked into bed, but lately he had become more independent in other ways. This was clearly one such way. "Yes, that can be arranged."
