“Heads up, someone’s coming down from pedes to take a look at our baby Jane Doe.” Dana says, phone tucked between her ear and shoulder. Robby feels his entire body stiffen.
“Oh?” He says, trying to go for casual as he leans up against the desk. He looks up at the glowing board above the two of them, scanning for his patients. “Do we know who?”
Dana levels a look at him as she hangs up the phone, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
“The one and only.” She glances over at the black thermos sitting innocently next to them, a bright yellow sticker faded with some age, corners curling, with bold letters saying ‘good job’.
“Ah. Right.”

Summary
“Good job, Mr. Buckley,” Firefighter Diaz says, once he’s standing right in front of Buck. He holds out the small toy, eyebrow quirking up. Is everything in slow motion? Buck thinks everything is in slow motion.
It feels like it takes forever for him to reach out and take it, but time seems to speed back up when their fingers brush, just slightly, during the exchange. He breathes in a little too sharply and nods at him, like, yes, an idiot, and his mouth is moving before he can stop it. “Uh, yes, yeah, thank you.”
...or, Buck’s an elementary school teacher. Eddie’s the hot firefighter that visits his school for a fire safety assembly. He is so normal about it. Seriously. Just ask his coworkers.

“I’ll do it,” Eddie repeats, looking at Buck in one of those silent conversation ways again, but Buck actually can’t figure out what he’s trying to say this time. It messes with his brain, until Eddie speaks again, “I’ll pretend to only be a little offended none of you have thought to ask me before, but Buck, I’ve fixed a lot of cars. I can look at yours.”
(or, the check engine light comes on in Buck's Jeep, Eddie volunteers to fix it and carpool with him in the meantime, and it all breaks down from there, literally and metaphorically)

He loves the kitchen sink and the drying rack on the counter, because he always washes and Eddie always dries and sometimes when he dries he chips the grey bowls and breaks the white plates, but it doesn’t matter because he bought the set second hand and really, they don’t need more than three plates, three bowls, three mugs, and three forks.
“Just three?” Maddie asks.
“Yeah, me, Christopher, and Eddie,” he says, like it’s obvious.
Maddie gives a knowing smile. “And Taylor?”
He shrugs. “It’s not like the four of us hang out."
“So who’s plate is she borrowing when they leave?” Buck stays quiet. She sets her mug on the table. “Moving out might help, but no matter where you go, you’ll only have three plates.”
(In which Buck hates his apartment, breaks up with Taylor, and makes a long overdue confession.)
