Carol drew near and loomed over the unresisting woman. Zosia’s eyes, delicate and expectant, looked up at her. She looked tall from down here. Imposing, even. It was apt for a personality as big as hers. The world shrank under the weight of it.
“Zosia,” Carol said. Slow, like she was pronouncing it for the first time. “Do you know that you’re pretty?”

The radiance of the sun’s rays that had awakened her as her body had been resting messily on the left side of Carol’s bed couldn’t compare to the radiance of watching Carol now – right there before her – writing with avid concentration and such beautiful, unwavering focus.
That particular light was brighter than morning itself.
And this precise moment was the perfect opportunity to make Carol understand even a small fraction of the happiness that awaited her in the Joining. Zosia was determined to do everything within her power to make her happy. They would try – truly and thoroughly – to show her what that future could hold.
