Steve sighs and gestures to the pool with his cigarette. "Right here," he says. Eddie tilts his head, uncomprehending. Such a tiny gesture, yet it makes something in Steve cringe, knowing what it means.
"Has anybody told you about Barb?" he asks. Eddie shakes his head.

The knock comes when he’s halfway to the kitchen with his and Wayne’s plates in hand. Eddie frowns and exchanges a look with his uncle, who shrugs, so he drops the dishes into the trash and goes to answer.
Steve Harrington is standing on their cinderblock front stoop, one hand clenching a cigarette while the other picks at the hem of the ugliest goddamn sweater Eddie’s ever seen.
“Hey,” Steve says like it’s any old Thursday. “You uh. You wanna get out of here?”

Summary
He thinks about the relief in Eddie’s voice when he said he had a hunch about Steve’s whereabouts, like Dustin is the chosen one for understanding what makes Steve tick. Eddie’s joked about it before; he’d called it “sibling telepathy” when Dustin had silently communicated his popcorn order at the movies, and he’d nudged Steve in the ribs when Steve’s nose wrinkled meaning Gross, dude. Then Steve had huffed a laugh, nudging Dustin back. Okay, okay. I’ll pay for it, you little shit.
But Eddie gets Steve, too, Dustin thinks; that’s why he called him. And yeah, it’s different than the way Dustin understands Steve, but it’s significant enough for Eddie to make the cut of Steve Harrington Interpreters in Dustin’s mind.

Steve could swear he sees a flash of hurt across Eddie’s face, but it’s gone before he can be sure.
“Alright,” Eddie says.
“Not because you’re a dude.” Steve needs to make that clear. “Just so you know. It’s entirely because it’s you, because you’re so fucking annoying.”
“Yeah, yeah, sure,” Eddie says, and at least he’s smiling now.
