Summary
Months after ATKID is shut down for good, one case in the winter of '81 has changed everything.
Now, in the spring of '82, between routine panic attacks and a mountain of new cases, Holden struggles to make sense of it all.
The only thing keeping him grounded is something Bill had given him those many months ago. He knows he has to give it back, but doing so would require two things of him: talking to Bill--when their current relationship is rocky at best--and letting go of the only part of him he's ever gotten to possess.
There are the grand things in life--emerald rings, a seafoam green house, a red pickup with a hatchet in its bed--but they are obnoxiously loud and gaudy compared to the everyday miscellaneous. The trivial, mundane objects of life have ghosts within them.
For once, it's not just Holden's ghosts haunting him.
It's Bill's, too.
--
or, four prosaic, everyday objects bill has given holden, and one thing holden gave him.

Summary
Spike and Jet never put a name to what they are doing together, and they both prefer it that way. They’re two people on a spaceship trying to make a living. It doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that.
Then the dog shows up. Then Faye. Then Ed.
“I don’t understand you, Spike.”
Jet’s face is serious, his gaze somber, and Spike decides he really doesn’t like it. He tosses the bloody gauze aside and finally puts his hands on Jet’s hips like he has wanted to this whole time and pulls Jet in close. “I’ll tell you a secret,” Spike says, flicking his gaze from Jet’s eyes to his mouth and back again; “I don’t, either.”

Summary
After that, it’s muscle memory: force his limbs to remember their routine motions, thrust an arm out to accept the bundle of fabric, strip off his kit for his Richmond zip-up and trackkies, tuck away his boots, slide on his trainers, don’t bother to shower, would rather do it at home when he can stay under the water long enough to pretend that he’s drowning. Try not to think about don’t speak to me like that. Try not to think about you can have that one for free. Try not to think about a room full of strained, stunned faces, and no one saying a thing, just watching and watching; Then fire pulsing through Roy Kent’s hands and lighting up his skin.
In the aftermath of the FA cup semifinal against Man City, Jamie Tartt burns.

Summary
“It’ll take two seconds,” Higgins says. “I like to keep up to date with all the players, you know. I just thought, well, you moved recently. And your emergency contact.”
He pauses here, and Jamie raises an eyebrow. His emergency contact? He’d probably filled out some joke response last time, hadn’t he. Fucking Queen of England, Boris Johnson’s wife, something good.
“Oi, let’s see it then,” and Higgins passes over the paper like it’s a live bomb, and Jamie scans down to where he sees his own handwriting sitting over a few dotted lines, and, well. It sure ain’t the Queen.
or: Jamie goes through a series of unfortunate events, changes his emergency contact a few times, and considers the possibility that maybe, actually, letting other people help isn’t all bad after all.

Summary
"Jamie’s fairly certain at this point that it is the natural order of things: you have to go out and drag joy home by the ear if you want any. So, he’s got no problem with that, he never did really. It’s just, well, it’s been increasingly difficult to do that. Or to feel anything other than… He’s not entirely sure what to call the weight pressing down on his chest when he sits in the locker room before training, but it’s that. All the time. And it is fucking Zava’s fault."
...
The evening before Richmond's last training for the Boxing Day fixture, Jamie feels so alone that he decides to go and buy a Christmas tree for the first time in his life. He gets in a car accident on his way there.
He's not sure how he could have alerted anyone of that fact with his phone gone and probably broken to pieces, but people seem weirdly mad about it. Jamie's convinced that's also Zava's fault.

Summary
Nothing had happened, is the point. Nothing had changed. Nothing that would explain why he’d had to choke down his dinner, had only managed part of it in the end, left the half-eaten remains to go bad in his kitchen sink.
Nothing had happened that would explain how when he’d gone to get undressed for bed that night he just… couldn’t. How the thought of taking off the heavy sweats he’d spent the evening in felt unnervingly like peeling off his own skin. How he’d crawled into bed still fully clothed, still cold, had curled into a ball, tucked deep under his duvet. How he’d just… gone.
Nothing had happened that would explain why he was still curled into that ball, still fully clothed in the dark all those hours later. Still awake, still gone.
He’s cold.
In which Jamie has a very-bad-brain-day and Roy tries to help.

Summary
Legolas’s skin was warm where he brushed against it, and his shoulders rose and fell in steady breaths as Aragorn’s fingers worked. Occasionally he would make a sound if Aragorn pulled a strand too hard or fumbled the flow of the braid—not a sound of pain, but that of a teacher, guiding the hand of his student.
Or: 5 times aragorn does legolas’s braids + 1 time it’s the other way around

For a moment he just studies the motorcycle. It's an ancient machine, a relic from the time before spinners, a time when the air was fresh and clean and clear; the fact that it ran at all is a minor miracle. Like him, it probably should have been retired long ago.
