    “You’re in rut,” Bruce whispered. He read as much as the computer offered him. When Kryptonians are of age and become close to a suitable mate, they go into heat or rut. They become protective of their mate and need to be close with them during this time. They seclude themselves in a “nest” and have sex with their mate until the period is over. If one endures the period without intercourse, it is extremely painful. Oh. “You think I'm your mate…” Bruce trailed off. He thinks it must be a mistake, Clark is mistaking him for someone else. It said the heat is triggered when they get close to their mate, but there's no way Clark thinks of him like that. His crush is one-sided. That he knows for sure. There is no way Clark likes-

    “Yes! Mate!” Clark chirped. His head which had been buried in the crook of Bruce's neck lifted so that he could look Bruce in the eyes. “Bruce,” Clark moaned out. “Be my mate? Please,” Clark whispered as he leaned forward.

    OR Clark listens to Bruce’s heartbeat to calm down, but then accidentally finds out his secret identity and goes into rut/heat.

    Once he gathers enough, a short blast of Igni gets the campfire started. It’s small and contained, so that Geralt could stomp it out in a second, but he still crouches by the fire and opens the sling so Jaskier can see. Which is when Jaskier dives headfirst into the flames with a screech and curls up defiantly in the middle of the campfire. He even closes his eyes, like he’s finally able to go to sleep. It looks absolutely and completely ridiculous.

    Then again: what does Geralt know about phoenixes? Until today, he didn’t even know they could have human forms.

    Or: Geralt is too late to save Jaskier. Fortunately, death is just a mild annoyance to a phoenix like Jaskier.
