A warm local diner on a chilly fall night, after dates have been made and kisses have been had. Steve and Eddie and Robin share secrets, insults, and waffles before heading back to Robin's apartment for some respective private time. (Follows immediately from Learn to Live So Free.)
“Steve snores,” Robin informed Eddie while Steve grabbed his toothbrush and something clean to sleep in, flicking her eyes to meet Steve’s for only a moment before fixing them on Eddie. Just long enough for him to get the idea that this wasn’t retaliation, this was for his benefit.
“So does my uncle,” said Eddie. “I think I’ll manage.”
Robin shook her head. “Steve snores,” she said again, “which is why I picked up these.” She pulled a pair of earplugs out of her jacket pocket, still in their package, accidentally dropping the pharmacy receipt on the floor when she did. “As soon as I close my bedroom door, I intend to put these in my ears and keep them in the whole night. Just so you know.”

Summary
Steve was a great wingman. So great, in fact, that after traveling up to Chicago for the weekend as moral support for Robin’s first college crush, it took all of an hour and a couple of wine coolers at a party near campus to hook her up with the redhead from her language lab. Thankfully, Steve knew he was a great wingman, plus it was a good three-hour drive just to get to the city in the first place, so he had the foresight not make the trip alone. All of which was why he was now nursing beers with Eddie Munson on the back porch of a random party house in Hyde Park, arguing about Mr. Mister.
Steve brings Eddie along to visit Robin at college in Chicago, and one hook-up, one ex, and one punch later the two of them are left killing time wandering the streets of Hyde Park, getting to really know each other for maybe the first time.

Never mind the next two weeks, the next eight hours stretched endlessly in front of him. He had no idea how to occupy his time. His house was basically empty, which sounded sad but was really a good thing, evidence he’d built himself the life he wanted – where he always had something to do, outside and with other people. Ilya had been restless for as long as he could remember, had never been able to sit still. He’d gotten in trouble for it as a kid at the dinner table and he got in trouble for it as a full grown man on the team bus. He’d gotten in trouble for it when the doctors had been trying to take the x-ray, his leg jumping without his permission.
Ilya gets injured, stops leaving the house, loses his mind, learns to read tarot, and sends Shane Hollander a lot of photos.

The image is almost unbearably tender for Shane, where his own seventeen year old thrill at seeing Ilya Rozanov meets all the things Shane knows about that lonely boy now.
Shane thinks: Do you love number 81 more than you love this man?
"Hey," Ilya says, brushing his knuckles over Shane's cheek. "Whatever I do, I will be there when you come home."
