Marshall didn't entirely tell the truth about Stan. He left some things out. Like the fact that Stan didn't live in Denver. He lived in Los Angeles. Or the fact that the first letter found its way to Interscope's office just fine. But music required truth more than it did honesty, and it wasn't really important that Stan didn't quite manage to kill himself or even that his name wasn't really Stan. The only thing that mattered was just how badly Marshall had fucked everything up and the fact that there was no way to ever put it right.
