Summary
As Yukari holds her skirt against her thighs to join her on the ground, the warmth that starts to soak back into Kotone’s body isn’t just from the borrowed clothing. She can’t feel the heat of Yukari’s shoulder as it presses into her own, not with the bulky layers of the coat, but the weight is there.
“What are you doing out here without your coat? Are you crazy?” She laughs near the end, but it’s soft, and has none of the usual spunk she’s come to expect from her best friend.

Summary
Letting out a frustrated grunt, Yukari kicks a zombie away from her, then slumps into the wall. She wants to go out fighting, but she’s been fasting intermittently to save on supplies, and hadn’t eaten yesterday. She’s still working off the calories of that breakfast bar from two days ago, and she can feel the fatigue creeping into her bones, mingling with that tear-inducing frustration. It was all for nothing. The rest of the team, the rest of her friends—if they are alive, it’s possible they won’t ever even learn about her, with how mangled her corpse is going to be after the monsters are done. Yukari’s far from a quitter, but it would probably be worse to fight impossible odds and then die anyway.
It just stings, a bit, knowing she’d walked right into this—that after everything, she’s going to die here without ever getting to see—
A sharp slicing sound breaks Yukari out of her reverie.

Summary
“Aragaki,” Mitsuru says, and sits up again. It’s less abrupt this time, so she’s able to catch herself before teetering forward into her own knees, propped up with her elbows pressed into the mattress. Aragaki still looks distinctly displeased; one of his hands hovers as if to coax her back into the sheets again, though he doesn’t move beyond that. “You’re missing class.”
Aragaki gives her this long, slow blink, as if he thinks Mitsuru just said something very stupid. “Sure am.”
“You—” Mitsuru struggles for a moment to word why this bothers her, manages, “you shouldn’t,” before her arms shake too badly and she has to drop herself back into the mattress. And really, it isn’t as if she’s dying. She’s been sick before and knows well enough how it feels, that this isn’t any worse than it usually is. There’s no reason why she should feel so dramatically weak when it’s clearly just some kind of bug she picked up.
Aragaki doesn’t seem any less concerned for it, looking her over with a furrow in his brow before he eventually deigns to speak again.

“I don’t like the idea of staging an intervention,” Haru muses, cupping a hand over her mouth. “That might make it seem like we’re angry at him, when all he’s doing is trying to help everyone…”
“His current way of living is unsustainable, however,” Yusuke points out. “What else can we do, if he won’t listen to one or even a few of us?”
Makoto bites her lip. She’s been toying with a suggestion, but she doesn’t know how much she likes it. Hopping into Mementos to change the heart of strangers they read about on the Phansite is one thing. These are people who they know are struggling, who are usually grateful after the fact—but it feels weirder doing it to someone they know. Even staring down the prospect of changing Sae’s heart hadn’t felt so weird and out of pocket—maybe because Akira is their leader?
…Still…
“There’s an option,” Makoto says stiltedly.

Summary
Seeming to relax, Kaede compliments Sayaka on her new earrings—which Kaito hadn’t noticed, girls have such sharp eyes for that stuff—before going on a gushing ramble about how pretty Sayaka is. Kaito pretty much half-listens, not out of irritation or jealousy or anything like that, but more because he’s distracted by how close Kaede is now, even with the counter in between them. She’s tied her hair back into a bun and a few loose strands have escaped. They frame her face prettily. Kaito wants to reach out and brush them out of the way. Maybe he could blame it on not wanting her to dip her hair in the coffee.
“So, you guys want the usual today?” Kaede eventually prompts, breaking Kaito out of his embarrassing train of thought. Face red, Kaito nods without even entirely registering what the usual means. After Sayaka agrees, Kaito pulls out his card to pay for the both of them, trying to regulate his breathing and simultaneously bite his tongue so he won’t say anything embarrassing.
After another pause, Kaede smiles and passes them their receipt.

“So that means…” Kaito can’t make himself finish the sentence right away. It’s all happening so fast, so suddenly, and Kaito is scared that if he says it aloud, it’ll stop being true. Or something will be wrong. Or he’ll wake up in the exisal with Kokichi dead and his sidekicks against him. Kaito swallows thickly, ignoring the pain it causes, and forces out, “That means… everyone’s alive, Gonta?”
It’s not Gonta who answers his question, though. “Yup! We’re all safe and sound, right here.”
Kaito turns so quickly he almost gets whiplash, feeling as though his eyes are about to bulge out of his skull. Standing there clad in pink sweats with messy hair and puffy eyes is Akamatsu Kaede. She looks exhausted, and there are faded scratches around her neck, and her hands are clasped in front of her, knuckles white with the amount of force she’s using to grip her fingers, but…
She’s smiling, shaky and genuine, and she’s just about as beautiful as the day everyone lost her.

“Kaito, wake up!”
In response, Kaito shoots upright in bed. He’s been a light sleeper since leaving the simulation, but from the clarity in his eyes and the phone in his hand, Kaede gets the sense that he wasn’t actually sleeping in the first place, so she decides not to feel bad about this. As Kaito blinks at her, bewildered, Kaede leans down to steal one of his coats off the floor.
“Wh—did you wake me ‘cause you wanted to borrow a coat?” Kaito rubs one of his eyes, swinging his legs off the side of the bed. His gaze darts down to his phone screen. “It’s past midnight, ‘ede…”
“That’s not why!” Kaede huffs. She bundles Kaito’s jacket tightly around herself, then snags another, marching forward to pull it over Kaito’s shoulders. She uses the sleeves of the coat to drag him to his feet, and to Kaito’s credit, he rises without much protest, albeit his brow knits with further confusion. “It’s snowing outside!”
