“What do you say about a contract, Xiao?” He looks at Venti again. In the moment he wasn’t paying attention, Venti shuffled even closer to him, and there was now barely a hair space between them. They haven’t been this close since—since the day before Xiao found out what Venti is.
“A contract?”
“I will be your bodyguard, like I said. I know you’re hoping for a peaceful way to give those names back, but there will always be greed out there, for what the book is. What it can do. I will protect you from that greed, and those that seek to use you.”
“And in return?”
Venti smiles. It looks nothing at all like the boy Xiao remembers. “On the day the Book of Friends has only one page left—you will give me back my name, of course!”
For as long as he can remember, Xiao could see ghosts and spirits, things no one else saw. For as long as he can remember, he has always been alone. Qingce Village, and Venti, change things.
