You make sure your smile is properly in place before you turn to face him. Normally you wouldn’t need to take so much care with such things, but after your father turned you away so firmly from Jin Ling, the prospect of being held away from Lan Xichen stings more than it should. Especially when you can’t imagine what errand is so urgent that your brother needs you to deal with it right this moment.
“Of course,” you tell him, bowing slightly. “Might I ask what is needed?”
You raise your head just in time to see your brother taking his son from the wet nurse’s arms, and have barely a moment to brace yourself before he’s holding Jin Ling out to you. But even if it’s been years, habit serves you well, and it’s pure reflex to support the baby’s head in the crook of your elbow as you take him into your arms.
