Between the gruesome corpses and the quiet, unsettling doctor Cullen who shows up like a statue in pressed slacks, lying through his teeth, Charlie’s got more questions than answers—and no one seems too keen on giving him either.
Charlie’s trying not to notice how his breath catches when the doc gets too close. He’s also trying not to notice how the bodies keep piling up, unsolved. Neither effort is going particularly well.
And if one more person tells him it was a bear, he’s going to shoot something. Probably not a bear.

Charlie stumbles often—he’s used to falling flat on his face—but he finally has the chance not to, and he’s not giving in that easily.

The streets aren’t as crowded as they usually are today, most of the holiday crowds hanging around Midtown to see the usual sights. It’s not like there’s an absence of people, but he sees why they’ve gone for him. His gait isn’t as even as it usually is, his breathing a little more ragged than he’d like, his incision aching from the cold weather and the exertion. They probably assumed that he wouldn’t be able to chase after them when he found out it was missing. Given by the way that tiny hand has frozen in his pocket, they didn’t quite get the timing right.

Dylan Rhodes encounters a group of kids--smart kids, brilliant kids, magical kids that are way, way too goddamn young to be as alone as they are--on his walk back from the Manhattan FBI office. And he finds them again, and again, and again.
Eventually, they all come home.

Ilsa digs her gun out of the bottom drawer of a dresser in a room she hardly ever enters one night, disassembles it and lays it all out on her kitchen countertop. That first night, it takes her a minute and twenty-seven seconds to reassemble it. Over the next two days, she gets the time down to forty seconds. More time passes—twenty-three seconds. More time—fifteen.
She starts to wonder if she can make other things out of the parts; tools, decorations, practical, simple objects that have nothing to do with the original item. But as Ilsa gets more and more familiar with the individual parts, she realizes that there isn’t really anything she can rebuild them into other than a gun.
Maybe it serves as some analogy for her life. Discarded, taken apart. She reassembles the gun in eleven seconds and realizes a gun is all it was ever meant to be.

“Got a full ride, they have a rodeo team and I have enough awards. That’s not the end goal though,” Tyler said, “I’m not sitting in a studio room to report on the news. I’m chasing them.”
“What? Like an on the ground reporter?”
“No,” Tyler shook his head and stared up at the sky with a dangerous glint in his eye as lightning lit up the clouds, “tornadoes. I’m gonna chase them.”
“Storm chasing?” Jake snapped and smacked him with the envelope, “Are you insane?!”

He took in a shaking breath and replied to her with a small, strangled, “Hmm?”
Her brow furrowed, another look he was becoming very familiar with. From the rescue crew, from the doctors, the psychiatrists, the nurses. That awful look of pity. “I wanted to know if there was anything you’d like to do this evening?”
Kirk shook his head, he’d been reading everything he could find on developments surrounding Tarsus IV, and Kodos. All he wanted to do was that, maybe read a book, and sleep, if he could.
“That’s okay,” she smiled at him, searching his face for a smile back, and seemed to accept it when none came. “I’m just so glad you’re home, safe.” Though not sound, Kirk noted. She hugged him, pressing her warm round face against his paler, more gaunt one.
He accepted the hug, the warmth of her body telling him that she wasn’t one of the many dead that flashed behind his eyelids when he tried to sleep. She wasn’t one of the remaining walking corpses he’d found himself in the numbers of. She was real and he supposed that meant that he was, too. Whatever that meant now.

Expect the recovery process to include lots and lots of emotional and physical whump.
(Set between Jim’s resurrection and the speech he gave at the end of Into Darkness. Keep in mind, an entire year passed in that time, so this will be a long fic. Let me also warn that it is a very heavy story and is very emotionally charged, so it may be at times distressing to read. Much of this is a study on mental health at its lowest.
