His head turned down, dark eyes focused on the printed words on the pages, studying, absorbing the information to put to use in future time. His face set neutral. Bill thought of him, in this moment, as peaceful. And a little meekly, as mesmerizing.

Summary
Ed reminds Oswald vaguely of Mooney’s younger hires. Maybe it’s his slender build, his veined forearms, his naivety; either way, he can’t help but think of them, catching their gaze as Fish snapped her fingers at him, demanding he divert his attention back to her. There was an unspoken want between them, the umbrellaboy and the escorts, heavy in the air and clear as day. Os never looked at the girls that way, nor did he consider them at all– he didn’t like their outfits, their attitudes, the way they strutted with arrogance. The men carried a sort of elegance that Oswald envied.

Oswald withdrew his hands, letting his arms drop uselessly at his sides. They both stared at the floor for a few seconds, attempting to recover from the shock they'd given each other.
“I know that feeling all too well,” Edward offered, disarmingly apologetic. “It hurts, doesn't it?”
“What hurts?” Oswald asked absently, turning to bypass him, finding himself blocked by Edward.
Edward's expression went softer, belying whatever flippancy he'd displayed before. “Rejection.”
