Bruce’s voice echoes through Dick’s mind, cold and calculating, disappointed. Disappointing is all Dick seems to be lately. Every move he does, every attack and inspection and plan seemed to have a fatal flaw that Bruce always finds, that Batman shakes his head at.
Dick is sick of it. So he sneaks out to prove himself.
It does not go as planned.

“Why is the sun out so soon?” Dick says suddenly, weakly. Bruce notices a fist clench at his side. “This feels wrong.”
Bruce clears his throat. He remembers that feeling. Just like the funeral, he's surprised at how much he remembers. Putting your own parents into the ground, church melodies that aren't quite real, socks damp from somber rain. And that need, that intangible desire to have the world mourn with him.
He understands. God, he does.

“What’s wrong?” Bruce's voice feels awkward and distant. "Nightmare?"
Dick nods furiously, messy hair bouncing up and down. "My parents," he says. "Their accident."
Bruce reaches out, but hesitates. He wishes he knew how to do this. Hopes that Bruce Wayne can scare off nightmares just as easily as Batman can scare off criminals.
He's way out of his league here.
