Summary
Yours, she gasps out, yours, Cavaradossi, yours. They’re in the back alleys of a stage, guttering lights a flicker above them. Isolde places a hand on her collar and they roar back to life. Dress up, running lines, they’re rehearsing one scene or another but Isolde has always had a penchant for improvisation: here is Isolde, heart in her hands, proffered like a prayer. Kakania swallows her heart and it crawls right out of her throat.

excellent. such fascinating characterization. it's been mentioned before, but the merging of greek epithets with modern turns of phrase is so fun, and all of it is just delightfully well written.

selestial genuinely never misses i don't know how they do it. the voices and characterization and dynamics and metaphor always perfect, the prose impeccable. i don't know how they just manage to understand each character and their voice perfectly. i also can't believe this is /this/ good through google translate???
also the bit where willow compliments her and caroline just thinks "??? does she have cancer??? is it terminal?????" had me in stitches

even with my horrendous mandarin this is still easily the best isokania fic i've read. their voices and characterizations are so, so on point, and there are so many little details from canon and also history?? that make it that much better.
pre-war vienna as a backdrop, isolde who knows the war is coming and kakania who doesn't want to believe it. they are so cynical yet so full of hope my god. isolde assigning kakania as don quixote and herself as sancho panza kill me now. her mad idealism and her unending loyalty. kakania who loves and abhors vienna so much yet she's the one who speaks of running away, and isolde essentially saying i would follow you anywhere. kakania who cannot deny isolde anything and isolde who loves her all the same.
both funny and devastating in places and so bittersweet.

Juri bangs her head on the stone, hard enough to see roses, but the pain barely registers, because Shiori is kissing her, with one hand tangled in the hair at the base of her neck and the other splayed out in the center of her chest.

augh. stunning. the prose is so lovely and every line imparts layers upon layers of characterization. i'm still chewing on this and probably will be forever. such a excellent character study with all the surreal edges of utena.
