Despite the rigorous thaumaturgical training and physical preparation that had led to this night, Malachi couldn’t shake the sliver of dread that had burrowed into his spine as the evening twilight rolled in. Knowing well what it meant to be Embraced, between the corpse-like touch of Octavius or the light suckle of Odette’s teeth in his artery on the few occasions she’d allowed it, he had no qualms about moving forward with the process, just reservations about what it meant to truly die.
