Summary
“Where are you going?” Hopper asked.
“My base? Are you guys coming or do you want the flower dogs to eat you?”
“Flower do- oh, demos.”
“What the hell is a demo?”
“Demogorgon? From that game your friends like, ‘Dungeons and Dragons’?”
“I don’t have ‘friends.’” Will said, wrinkling his nose and almost recoiling at the idea. “At least, none I remember.” He whispered, looking away before shaking his head and continuing on the tracks. “And what’s Dungeons and Dragons? It sounds like a fantasy book.”

Summary
Mike looks at Will for a moment before asking, “Have you heard of Dungeons and Dragons?”
Dungeons and Dragons. The name sounds familiar, giving him the same deja vu that Mike did when he turned up at his exhibition, even though he’s certain he’s never actually heard or seen it before. That’s harder to explain, so he shakes his head, saying, “I can’t say I have.”
“Right,” Mike says after a while, clearing his throat. “Well, it’s this…like, fantasy role-playing game where you can write stories and you and your friends’ characters can go on adventures and…anyway. I played it a lot growing up, back in Indiana. And I had a friend—well, he was my best friend, really—who really liked my campaigns, which are like, the stories you write and…yeah. He told me I should become a writer, and I guess that always just stuck with me.”
“I bet he’s proud of you.”
Mike gives a small smile. “I hope so.”
Will has been in California for as long as he remembers. Not that he remembers much.

Summary
It’s the end of the world but Will’s biggest problem is Mike Wheeler.
It shouldn’t bother him so much. After all, he’s the one who ripped off the bandaid. He’s the reason they’re not speaking anymore.
That message gets lost somewhere in translation.
or
Will’s never been good at conflict resolution and Mike’s never been good at flirting. Some things just never change.

Summary
"I can't say it," Mike admits, because he feels the words twitching readily on his tongue, but they refuse to come out. Will is a lot braver than Mike, a whole lot. "It must've been really hard for you, to do it in front of everyone the way you did."
Or, Mike and Will go to Stacey's party together. It takes only a few drinks before the shame fades, giving way to Mike's real feelings. The feelings he's kept hidden from even himself for as long as he can remember.

Summary
“Will—”
“Tell me something else,” Will whispered, eyes still squeezed shut. “Tell me about — about the person you mentioned. The one who loves me. What — what’s he like?”
Oh.
Stories are usually so clear-cut, so simple — the adventure, the victory, the happy ending. Real life doesn't settle quite as easily, for Mike — but that doesn't mean the story's ending is out of his hands. He just has to take the leap.
