Summary
Once upon a time, there was a boy who lived in a hole in the ground.
Kaz doesn't know how long he has been there. Time has stopped mattering after so much of it has passed, when there has been nothing to track each day with. There is no light in the cell and the guards don't bring him meals at any regular times. Keeping track of how long they have been keeping him there isn't a necessity. Not when there are more important things to try and fixate his mind on.

It’s all familiar words - Fjerdan nursery rhymes, prayers, commands from shouting officers, old drinking songs. The beat is listless, though; it drags and aches. Sometimes, he tries to reply to Djel, but the words fall apart on his tongue, tasting like iron and then nothing at all.

When he's assigned to seduce someone at one of Pekka's parties, he meets Inej Ghafa, the Banshee of the Barrel, and tells her he can help her. She decides to take him up on that.

Summary
When they slip into bed together that night neither of them comments on it. The presence of a singular bed leaves little room for complaints, and although Jayce could’ve been the gentleman and offered to sleep on the tiny, soft-looking sofa in the living room, he figures that becoming inextricably bound in every conceivable universe across all space and time with another man makes sharing a bed with aforementioned man the very last thing anyone should worry about on a cosmic scale.
Plus it’s not like he isn’t irrevocably in love with Viktor anyway.
Or, Viktor and Jayce wake up somewhere else, and begin to put back together the pieces of their lives.

If the police decide to raid, they can shut down the bar, but they can do much worse to patrons caught wearing the wrong clothes or dancing with the wrong people. So every night, Inej walks the maze of the West Village, and watches for the cops. And she thinks about Kaz.
