Every time Neil and Mr. Keating compared Todd to Walt Whitman, it would sink into his chest a little bit more. When Todd finds himself without Neil, the nickname still surrounds him and only now does it make him wonder.
The nickname makes him think of Neil, and to think of Neil when he's gone makes Todd sick.
