He inhaled through his nose, thrashing in the narrow bed, and smelled– something familiar, cigar smoke and– “Jerry?” he said incredulously, getting his mouth free. His body relaxed before his mind could interfere. Jerry wouldn’t hurt him.

(Or: Julian has always thought Garak just had a weird little habit. Until another Cardassian does the same thing to him, and seems to imbue the gesture with a meaning Julian really had not anticipated.)
