“Doesn’t have to be that way, you know,” Wolfwood says instead, because he’s an idiot with no impulse control. “Pleasure can be reciprocated.”
“Ah.” Vash smiles, sheepish. “I don’t need it to be.”
“But do you want it?”
Vash considers that, the revelation that he could possibly ever want something and be granted it. In the end, he shakes his head. “It doesn’t matter. I’m not asking somebody to do that.”
“And if they offered?”
"Are you offering?"
Vash wants to help people however he can, including getting them off, but they never return the favor. Wolfwood changes that.

"Do you have any idea how long it took to clear out the sand from the back seat when you fell down that dune last week? An hour, Vash. I love you, but you're walking."
Something about Vash's smile suddenly looked off. "Oh. Uh."
He didn't say anything else for a very long and confusing moment, until it slowly dawned on Meryl that perhaps she had just said something strange. Something she never said.

After a disastrous accidental confession (of sorts), Meryl tries to move on. Vash gets in the way.

“Since when the hell did you have a 𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘬?” Wolfwood demands, feeling a bit crazy as Vash ducks his head and tries to hide his face by turning it to stare at the wall. “Is that seriously what that is? Are you 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥?”
“This is from earlier!” Vash swore back, face as red as his coat, neck bent and nearly nose-to-nose. “Give me a break, I’m not used to this!”

Summary
Wolfwood has long since come to terms with the fact that there is no god. There is simply no other explanation for the atrocities he is subjected to day in and day out. The Bible passages the preacher used to share at the orphanage may as well have been fairytales for all the relevance they’ve had to his short and miserable life. That is until the good begins to reveal itself to him. And once he begins seeing it, he can’t look away.
Maybe there’s more to this life than he thought.
