Not the point of this story but I realization I had upon reading this: as someone who has had a tenure as The Family Fuck Up, when you’re The Fuck Up of the Year(s) in a loving family, you really come to understand how thoroughly loved you are through the infinite well of forgiveness, patience, and encouragement you are smothered in.
I think I have just realized that about my ideal Jason characterization. He’s the “favorite” not because he’s a saint but because he’s NOT. He’s a fuck up. If Bruce is truly loving/rooted in love, even if it’s messy!! If he really loved Jason in a deep parental way…LOVES him NOW, MISSES his prodigal son?? There’s no way he’s NOT constantly eying the fattened calf and waiting for Jason to put down the guns, cross the threshold, and COME HOME, already.
