Summary
"Will, why wouldn't I care?," Mike asks.
Will stops and turns to face Mike. God, the confusion and hurt on his face are infuriating. Can't this boy ever notice anything? Maybe if he noticed more, they wouldn't be in this situation. They would be Will and Mike, walking home after a hang out. They wouldn't be El's brother and El's ex-boyfriend, at odds in the woods after one of them made the mistake of mentioning the dead girl they both love too much.
"Because, Mike!," Will replies in his same sharp tone from before, getting louder and more desperately angry with each word. "All of you still walk on eggshells around me, and when you're not treating me like a fucking toddler, you treat me like a stand in for El!"

Summary
"Hey," Naomi says into his ear, continuing her little game of judging Will's type. "Right by the bar. Guy with the blue shirt and the long hair."
She points, stack of silver rings glinting on her finger and her bracelets rattling. Will follows the line, and his heart stops right along with the next gust of wind that comes in through the door.
The so-called guy with the blue shirt and the long hair is definitely his type. In fact, Will might say this guy is the origin of his type. He would recognize that profile anywhere. It practically got him into Pratt, the angles sketched over and over in countless different lights and contexts as Will honed his skill over the years. Will just never thought he'd see that profile under bright blue and yellow lights as some pop song about long lost lovers played over the speakers.
Standing there, at this stupid gay club in stupid New York City, is Mike Wheeler.

Summary
They reach the next platform, Will first and Mike second. Will is leaning forwards against the railing, looking out at the Upside Down.
Mike walks up next to him, already grabbing the water bottle from his backpack. "Water?"
Will nods. "Yeah. Thanks."
Mike takes the lid off and drinks some before passing it to Will. He watches the careful way Will reaches for the top so their fingers won't brush even though that's a bad grip and there's a chance the bottle falls several stories onto the ground.
He keeps watching as Will takes a sip. Is there something more in the way he watches Will? Mike never really let himself consider it.

Summary
Mike fidgets, knocking his feet together and playing with the hems of his sleeves. He laughs, strained and nervous. "Shit, this is so much harder than I thought, but, well, what if I told you you're not as different from all of us as you think? That I might be…that I am like you in more ways than you think."
The entire universe goes to a screeching halt. This dimension could also implode and Will would have no idea, because he's almost certain he's passed out from exhaustion and entered some kind of messed up, torturous dreamscape the likes of which Henry would be envious of.
Then Mike looks at him, and it shatters the idea that this is a manifestation of Will's subconscious. In his dreams, Mike isn't ever this scared. There aren't ever tears shining in his eyes and doubt etched into his features and a stiff fear in his posture. It's almost worse that it's real. Since it's real, Will has to face this in all of its messy, horrible truth.
And the truth is, if this conversation goes where Will's expecting it to, Mike is not straight.

Summary
"Yeah." Mike leans his head against the passenger window at just the right angle so his glasses won't dig into the side of his face. "Only took me like five existential crises to figure it out."
"One less than me," Lucas replies. "Took me about six breakdowns at Max's bedside to decide I wanted to become a doctor."
Despite the lingering sadness behind the joke, Mike smiles a little. "We're so fucked up."
"Obviously," Lucas agrees with a smile of his own. "Two fucked up best friends who stopped the end of the world with ease, but couldn't figure out what they wanted to do with their lives without a mental health crisis."
Mike breathes out a laugh. "The end of the world was a walk in the park compared to all of this stuff. I'd rather deal with another nightmare dimension than Mr. Walsh's Calc BC class."
in which mike thinks a lot about dreams and the future, lucas asks for relationship advice, and they both wonder how in the world they made it this far.
