    It took him a mere thirty seconds to realise that he was losing more than a successful rebellion or his own life, the second of which was much less important in the grand scheme of things. The loss of potential stung sharply in more than those two places, and this third thing he was losing, this grand and most likely wonderful possibility for something, pinched his heart, ached, burned more than anything else he had ever felt.

    Hindsight, as it turned out, was cruel and vindictive. Spiteful in the most malicious, deviously ironic manner. And now Enjolras’ opportunities to fix it were way too few, while the desire to do so came much too late.

     

     

    or: a realisation (THE realisation) comes too late. What it takes for Enjolras to accept his feelings, as it turns out, is facing imminent death.
