In the next moment, Carlos could hear a thud, followed by a curse, and he was pretty sure the guy had just hit his head somehow. Carlos winced in sympathy.
“Sorry! Sorry, it’s just your neighbor here.”
“Dude,” came the reply, the voice sounding rough, probably from all the crying. “Way to give a person a heart attack. Also, creepy much?”
“My apologies. The walls here are basically paper with some paint slapped on. So uhm… noises are somewhat muffled but… not really, I guess.”~*~

Summary
1885. TK is son of Owen Strand, of Strand Intercontinental Railroad Company. They have traveled from their home in Manhattan to the southern US to cut deals with landowners there to build a lucrative rail line through central Texas. TK is 26, and his father thinks he’s getting rather old to be unmarried. He has warned TK that if he does not find a husband by the end of the year, he will arrange a marriage, as Owen cannot by law bequeath his fortune upon his death unless his son is married. TK is displeased with having to hurry his decision to wed. Truly at his heart, he is a romantic and wishes to marry for love. It’s just that love has been hard to come by with the flighty boys of his set back home in New York. He’s not holding out hope for any prospects in whatever back country they’re traveling to either.

The door wasn’t entirely closed, but TK shut it completely once he was inside the moonlit room, sighing quietly when his eyes finally rested on his boyfriend’s face, calm and just as beautiful as a person could ever be. Carlos was laying on his back, one of his arms spread over the right side of the bed ― TK’s side of the bed ― and the other over his naked stomach, his chest calmly indicating his steady breaths.
TK smiled, his heart pounding against his ribcage for the thought that Carlos was waiting for him. After almost a year together, that man, sweet, incredible, and patient Carlos was still waiting for him to come home. How did he get so lucky?

Carlos shrugs. “I mean, isn’t that kind of the definition of soulmates? Someone that’s destined to be a part of your life in some way, no matter what?”
TK nods, clutching a pillow to his chest. “Is that something you believe in?” It’s surprising, really, that they’ve never had this conversation.
“Do I believe that two souls can be so connected that no matter the universe they’re able to find their other half?” Carlos doesn’t seem at all troubled by the question. “I don’t think we’d be here otherwise.”

Summary
As much as TK wishes they could, they can’t collapse back into bed together and spend the rest of the day in each other’s arms with tears on their faces. They have to attend a service with hundreds of strangers, they have to put on their dress uniforms and stand at attention as Gabriel is lowered into the ground. If he lets TK hug him and kiss him and empathize with him, Carlos won’t be able to keep it together, and he doesn’t have time to break apart. They have to go. TK understands it. That doesn’t make it hurt any less, when Carlos grabs his hat and leaves the room without a glance or another word.
An expansion of the ending scene of 4x17 and the opening scene of 4x18.

Summary
TK could feel the rays of sunshine against his naked skin, the blankets covering only down his waist as he laid on his stomach. The warm Texan breezing over his body denoted how Carlos was already up, for his body wasn't covering his side as it usually was when they fell asleep like that.
He groaned, tapping the mattress in a vain search for the warm body that should still be against his, and then let out a disappointed breath. TK rolled over, the covers tangling around his waist and his position diagonal on the bed, his head sinking between his and Carlos' pillows. He took in a deep breath, inhaling Carlos' scent and the morning air that came through the window, and listened to the sounds around the house.
Or,
There's nothing TK hates more than mornings in which he had to see Carlos leaving. And there's nothing TK loves more than Carlos, anyway.

TK Strand, who just wanted something casual, until he didn’t, and then they broke up anyway, and then he nearly died and they got back together, and so many sad and intense and wonderful things happened, and then he brings a lizard home to cap if off. TK Strand who is chaotic and impulsive and passionate and the strongest, funniest most beautiful person Carlos has ever met. He has just proposed. This is everything Carlos wanted.

But before he can remember how to answer that, loud footsteps start banging down the corridor outside the room. They skid inside, and a guy follows them.

They are inches apart. He can smell Carlos. He can feel a tingle of the warmth coming from his body. He is almost knocked back by the reminder of the size of him – big, strong, cozy Carlos, the way he can fill a space.The last time TK saw Carlos, he didn’t really look at him. He was in such a panic that the room spun. He had to walk away quickly, purposefully upright and strident so he didn’t collapse. It was like he was running along a bridge that was falling apart behind him. When he reached the end, to apparent safety, there was no way back. Carlos was far away, left behind on the other side of the chasm that had suddenly cracked out of the beautiful earth between them.
