Toni’s eyes linger to the man to their right. Paul seems unfazed, maybe a little amused, scanning the clearing for his friends. His brow is furrowed as his eyes wash over the boys, and land swiftly on Toni.
What an incredibly fucking weird feeling.
It’s like something inside of her shifts into its correct place with a satisfying click - there’s something, and she doesn’t know what it is, but there’s something deep in her chest cavity that was off-kilter before that exact moment.
To her surprise, Paul’s expression changes completely, seemingly instantaneous upon looking at her. She watches as any pressure in his brow seems to relax entirely, the man’s jaw dropping open as he views her. His eyes look so soft all of a sudden, the look on his face seeming possessed, entranced in some way.
Entranced seems the perfect word to describe it. Before she can register what’s happening, the man has quite literally fallen to his knees, the look in his eyes nearing how a religious zealot would view an incarnation of God himself.

Summary
People tended to come and go from working at the Company. Depending on their situation, sometimes their debts would be paid after a few quotas, and they’d go back to whatever planet they came from. Other times, they’d get out of debt, only to fall right back into it again, whether that was at their own hand or through underhanded business practices like ship rental fees or random penalties. Even Speedy had ended up with the Company, though that implied he had a choice — his options were either collect scrap or rot in a jail cell for the rest of his life. He figured a majority of people would have made the same decision he did.
