Summary
When Kie stepped on stage, one hand loose around the neck of her bass, the only thing she was aware of was the loudest silence she’d ever heard. One long, agonizing moment of it where she blinked at the crowd spread before her and took in their faces, the way each and every one of them was holding their breath, waiting for someone who wasn’t her.
Then, cacophony. Murmurs turned to shouts, boos, and Kie strode forward and grabbed onto the mic like it was someone’s throat.
“If you want Sarah,” she said, “you can have her.”
And then she sang.

Summary
Kiara would be lying if she said she didn’t think about it.
He’s wearing cargo shorts and a sleeveless shirt. Kiara thinks about reaching into the haphazardly cut holes and spreading her fingers on his stomach, letting her head fall into the space between his shoulder and neck, leaning her weight on his back. She’d forgotten; how much he can make her want without even trying.
Kiara and JJ go on a surf trip, just a couple of years late.

Luke’s always found a way to ruin every good thing JJ’s ever had.
And Kie’s the best thing.
But the little comments were consistent. And he doesn’t wanna think that anything Luke told him has stuck with him, but he knows that's not possible. He’s absorbed years of little comments and jabs, pieces of questionable wisdom that just became part of his everyday life. Things the Pogues would roll their eyes or laugh at because they didn’t really understand where they came from.
But this – Luke’s certainty that Kiara would eventually see JJ for the trash he was and leave? That idea burrowed its way into his very being, no matter how defiantly he proclaimed that it would never happen.

Summary
“Kiara’s pretty hot.”
His voice echoes through the room. It takes JJ a second to realize what happened – that the mic had turned on at exactly the wrong time and projected his words for everyone to hear. Including Kiara. JJ learns very quickly that she has a glare that could cut diamonds.
The room is silent as the echo of his words die. John B’s jaw hits the floor, but JJ can’t bring himself to move. He’s frozen in place, staring at Kiara as a handful of cameras swivel to face her. Behind the AV Controls, Pope ducks under the desk. JJ can feel Wheezie’s anger, even though she’s standing by the far wall.
The silence seems to stretch on for a small eternity. JJ doesn’t breathe.
Then, the reporters erupt in questions.
All except Kiara.

But hey, it’s her bachelorette party and if Sarah wants to get messy drunk and watch a strip show then she can get messy drunk and watch a strip show.
‘Woo hoo!’ Sarah yells out over the ambient pop music and muffled sound of the talking crowd.
Beside her Cleo laughs, ‘Calm down, girl.’
‘No I won’t calm down. Because I-‘ she flips her pink feather boa over her shoulder for emphasis. ‘Am getting married.’
‘Oh you are? Wow, how could I have forgotten that.’

‘They just needed help packing shit up before the storm.’
‘Don’t they have grounds staff for that? You’re a busboy, JJ.’
JJ rolls his eyes, half tempted to just hang up on his best friend, why the hell is he pushing back on this so much? He thought it was a totally plausible lie.
