    Summary

Apollo tips his head against the window and thinks of years spent watching the holiday season pass him by from behind a wall of glass, too parent-less and too sad and not culturally-Christian enough for Christmas in sunny Los Angeles. The lights, the music, the tinsel and fake snow and the false smiles of supposedly happy families, it all always seemed like sentimental veneer to him—as though holiday cheer were something of a commodity, peddled to people with far simpler lives and far happier families than his.

He thinks, now, that he may not have it entirely right. He may, in fact, just be lonely.

Or: At the end of a tumultuous year, Apollo visits LA for his first proper family Christmas.

“You know,” Trucy says, kicking her heels up onto the dashboard in the way she knows Apollo hates, “this is kind of a weekend dad thing to do. Taking me to the aquarium. Are we gonna go to the zoo next? Or the science museum? Ooo, camping, are we gonna go camping?”

“You keep that talk up and you won’t get anything from the gift shop,” Apollo replies, which on the one hand is a very weekend dad thing to say in Trucy’s opinion, but on the other she does really want to spend his money on a plushie sea otter, so she sets about to messing with the radio instead.

Or, Apollo takes Trucy to the aquarium, and they very decidedly do not talk about their mother.

    Summary

The doctors warned him that the concussion could cause mood swings, especially combined with the pain of his other injuries and his very fresh grief, but he didn’t think it would be so hard. He thought that once everything was all said and done, that he’d feel better—that finding Clay’s killer would be enough catharsis, and that once he got some sleep he would be able to function without this horrible weight crushing his chest or this deep, deep agony clawing at his insides. Foolish, really, as Apollo has lived with the pain of loss his whole life.

Or: The dust settles, everyone goes home, and Apollo has the biggest physical and mental breakdown of his life. It's a long road toward actually being fine, but it turns out he doesn't have to walk it alone.

    Summary

Pearl Fey cleans the temple like the lowest devotee. She helps translate foreign records into Khurainese, for she is nearly fluent. She stands beside children and frightened women in the docket, helping Apollo and his newly trained lawyers coax testimony from the anxious and weak. They call her the Golden Pearl for the way her light hair catches in the hot Khurainese sun and Rayfa hates her more each passing day.

    ~~

Or, Pearl Fey comes to Khura’in.
