“Oh, I just remembered,” Dustin reaches into his pocket and pulls out four rings. They glisten in the wet night air.
He’s been bringing them with him everywhere, a distinguishable weight in his pocket he never leaves the house without. He still has yet to try them on; doing so has always seemed immoral to him. They were never intended to be his, after all. But after months of deliberation, Dustin had decided that if he ever were to wear them, he should at least show them off to Eddie.
He slips them on: index, middle, and ring fingers, then the ring finger on the other hand, the way Eddie used to. They’re a little loose, but maybe he’ll grow into them.
He holds up his decorated hands parallel to the name etched in the headstone. “What do you think?”

After the events of the finale, Dr. Kay doesn't let the party go so easily. And she believes she's found the perfect leverage to make Dustin Henderson, boy genius, talk-- Steve Harrington.
AKA the one where Steve and Dustin are interrogated by the military. Hurt followed by copious amounts of comfort and trauma recovery. This is a love story.

Dustin would have laughed if you’d told his younger self he’d become a regular drug user. That wasn’t him. The kid who went to science camp. Who was branded a genius. High school valedictorian. He wasn’t the type to go to parties every weekend. Except at eighteen that was exactly what he was doing. Every weekend a different dorm. Drinking because he really didn’t want to be the weird kid again. Drinking led to girls, which then led to boys, who were infinitely better. Which somewhere along the way led to ecstasy.
Except the feeling Dustin had been chasing always felt hollow. Never quite helping the way he wanted. The way he needed. And every single time he ended up calling Steve. Never speaking, just needing to hear his voice.
Until Dustin has a bad trip.
Taking too much. Flying no longer feeling like flying but falling into an endless abyss. Needing Steve more than ever.

'What if Dustin and I met Junior year and were friends in high school?' Steve likes the answer so much he's tempted to forget everything else.
