“Okay, you can open your eyes.”
The first thing Shauna notices is how close Jackie’s face is to hers. Like, uncomfortably close. The second thing is the way that Jackie’s eyes flick down, once, then twice.
“Uh, Jackie?” Shauna sits up a little, trying not to meet Jackie’s eyes- she can’t quite figure out where this pit in her stomach- this sudden inability to look at Jackie straight in the eyes- comes from. This feeling in her chest that makes her feel like her heart is on fire whenever Jackie is a little too close. The way she’d been feeling since she was 9 years old, spending the night at Jackie’s house for the first time.
