He cuts her off, “I know, Max.” he says softly. She feels relieved. “Listen,” he says gently, “If you’re ever feeling up to doing something like this again, you let me know. I’ll always be around, okay? Always.”
All of Steve's attempts at getting Max to come back from whatever metaphorical pit she had fallen in become worth it when she finally agrees to get some dinner with him and lets him into her world just enough so they can both pretend like everything is okay.

“Don’t be.” Lucas shrugs, “It’s not your fault Jason lost it.”
“Maybe.” Steve agrees, “But I shouldn’t have let you deal with that alone.”
“I didn’t. Not really.” He finally tears his eyes away from Max and looks at Steve, “Do you remember when Billy went after me? And you fought him?”
Steve huffs a laugh but there’s no humor in it, “How could I forget? He beat the shit out of me, gave me a killer concussion.”
“Sure, but if it wasn’t you.. It would have been me. It would have been worse.”Steve and Lucas have a chat in Max's hospital room about Steve being their protector. Inspired by something I saw that pointed out how Lucas threw punches similar to the way Steve did and how Erica used her flashlight as weapon like Steve used that radio in S3.
